I don't have any of the January books on hand, but I think I will go for The Roots of Heaven by Romain Gary. I can get the French paperback for a good price on eBay, and I haven't read anything in French for a while. It's set in Africa, so there may be a lot of words I'm not familiar with, but it will be good practice!
I am torn between The House of Seven Gables, Claudine's House, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Any suggestions or advice appreciated.

The only one I read was Claudine's House which I enjoyed. I can recommend the movie based on the author Colette staring Keira Knightley.

You know I like a movie tie in!!Diane wrote: "Jane wrote: "I am torn between The House of Seven Gables, Claudine's House, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Any suggestions or advice appreciated."

I'm struggling with my book, The Roots of Heaven. I found it too dense to read in French, so I ordered it in English, but it took two weeks to arrive so I'm not sure I will finish, with everything else I'm reading.
I just finished listening to the Secret History. It definitely kept me entertained, although I liked the second half with all crack ups better than the long build up it took to get us there. I'm not sure that was fully necessary from a character perspective since I didn't find anyone too fully convincing as a rounded out human anyway.
Finished The House of Mirth
and really enjoyed it a lot. The way Edith Wharton decribes the constraints of women in those times is very light and often witty, but while reading the book you feel all the time the threatening of a bad ending in one way or another. A five star read for me.
