[BWF] Updraft by Fran Wilde ★★★½

I am not at all sure why this book is tagged steampunk as it's missing those steam engines etc... There are wings that people use to fly but there are no flying engines and there were lenses they use to protect their eyes which sound like those you find in steampunk novels but other than that, I'm rather nonplussed.

The beginning was rather slow, I thought. From the book description, I just wanted to get on with the "meat" of the story but it took some time though looking back now, I see that there were more to see about this world and characters to meet which will become important later on in the story. Nevertheless, it took more than half the book before I could really get into this story and rooting for this protagonist. She started off very strong or at least, she thought she knew who she was and what she wanted to be until the world shifted under her and everything she thought she knew was just lies. Nevertheless, her strength & courage shone through her choices.
