Sylvia Ashe has recently moved to London in 1920 after the death of her mother from the Spanish flu and the loss of her brother to the war. She is able to find a position as a librarian in a private library but is soon fired when a handsome young man named Gabe Glass comes to visit her at work. Sylvia had approached him at a cocktail party knowing he is the son of a famous magician. Hoping he can help her find out about her own family and the secrets her mother never told her Sylvia asked Gabe if he could assist her. Feeling guilty for getting her fired, Gabe finds her a new job at the Glass Library, a building full of books about magic. Gabe works as a consultant with Scotland Yard and is presently investigating the theft of a magic painting from a local gallery. Seeing what a quick mind Sylvia possesses, Gabe enlists her help in his quest to find the thief.
