anna❦ (annams86) hi guys ik this is probably very very controversial but can someone pls tell me why everyone is soooo obsessed with acotar/sjm? i wanna be in on it😭 i did NOT like sjm’s writing at all, the world building was so complicated i couldn’t picture a lot of things so i wasn’t enjoying reading it in my head. can someone pls tell me if i’m the only one or if i should just push through it and if it gets better in tog or cc 😭🥹

ashh ³³ ᵈᵘ ᵈᵘ ᵈᵘ (adiexe) yeah idk i didnt enjoy it like i didn't see what made it so much better than your average romantasy series 🤨

♡ Tkay! (tkaayyy) | 189 comments I'm on book 5 of TOG and don't get the hype either. ACOTAR was okay but as it progressed, I started to dislike the main characters, and it got boring. The writing is mediocre, and there are so many better fantasy/romantasy books out there.

My biggest complaint is that so many people compare other books to ACOTAR/TOG and it's frustrating.

What fantasy/romantasy books do you think are better?

Nightstrider
The Hunger of the Gods
The City of Brass
The Bone Season
Gild
Empire of the Vampire

to name a few.

Grace Hall | 2 comments When it came to the first ACOTAR book and the first ToG book, tbh even Crescent City I struggled with but by the end of all of them I loved them so much! I think ACOTAR gets much better towards the end of the second book. So I would power through orrr sometimes if a book is over hyped, I can’t get into it! Like the Shatter Me series, everyone raved but I could barely get through the first book so I do understand. If you like Romantasy have you read Blood and Ash/Flesh and Fire series by Jennifer L Armentrout ?

angie | 27 comments It’s hyped because it’s actually good, the first book is mid but the rest of the series is amazing. If you don’t like her writing then don’t read it.

the world building actually seemed elementary to me when you compare it to GRRM, Fonda Lee, or S.A. Chakraborty. I like world building that's so complex it draws you into the world but SJM didn't really do that for me. The romance was ok but no amount of romance will make me stay for 4+ books if the writing, magic system, and world building are subapar.

Empire of the vampire is literally misogynistic. To a disgusting fault at that.

I gave examples of books I thought were better written and superior to ACOTAR. Thank you though.

Kristina | 300 comments I found I don’t like many books that everyone seem to be obsessed with 😕 Like I’m sorry but A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is so mediocre, unrealistic and highschool-y that I barely managed to complete it. Maybe it’s me. I need complex writing, I love Leigh Bardugo and I think her writing is high above SJM for example, especially Six of Crows and King of Scars.
Gild (the Plated Prisoner series) is also very good, and This Woven Kingdom by Tahereh Mafi.
Thanks for the other recommendations, I will be checking them out! 😊

Vikki | 3 comments I really enjoyed ACOTAR. A Court of Mist and Fury is one of my favorite books. Everyone is going to have different taste and opinion of all media, just like how people have varied taste in music or movies. I think ACOTAR has a very commercial feel so it makes it easy for it to be popular but that isn't going to be for everyone.

I enjoyed ACOTAR (i admit there were some scenes that made me question my choice) but in my opinion, throne of glass is better.

alexis メ0 | 8 comments I’m gonna be honest i didn’t really like it until the second half of the book. It was SOOOOO confusing and slow like half the book felt like filler 😭😭. It was not good enough for me to read the second book tbh, i’m kind of interested? But not enough.
