I joined the Goodreads Short Story Club a year ago so this year have been reading a short story every week , with a summer break . We are reading Black Water : The Anthology of Fantastic Literature ed . Alberto Manguel and the stories are well curated , each one speaking to the ones adjacent to it . I have enjoyed being surprised by some writers whom I have never read and by the depth and layers of meaning in the short form . I have also read or listened to more poetry. I have sacrificed non fiction reading this year , something I mean to correct next year .
For me it was more of science fiction and fantasy and far less of crime and mystery. And, of course, a healthy dose of the classics. I have been wanting to read more sci-fi and fantasy because I have wanted to escape a little more and I think this genre offers this experience.
More: Manga. Not necessarily a conscious decision but a result of having a young adult afficionado who recommends various manga to me.
Less: Chunksters.
A lot more prize reading (I tried to read US/Canada Republic of Consciousness longlist earlier this year; read 8 of 10, I believe) and a lot more non-fiction than usual (or so it feels--I haven't actually tallied it up yet). I haven't read much poetry but it's about the same as last year.
