John Warner (jwarner6comcastnet) | 96 comments This historical novel is a blending of horror and drama with a touch of magical realism. With the kidnapping of the Lindberghs' child in 1932 still fresh in their minds, two grifters trying to eke a nefarious living during the Great Depression decide to kidnap two children from a wealthy New Orleans family. After the crime is committed, the only one that might come to the children's aid is Curtis Mayhew, a young black male who works as a "Red Cap," a person who helps passengers at train stations. Curtis possesses a paranormal gift (and a curse) which may be the family's only means to rescue the children.

McCammon's strength is his character development, which draws readers into their world. As Curtis grapples with his unique ability, he confronts the harsh realities of his environment, including issues of prejudice and violence that loom large in the American South of the era. The pacing of the narrative never falters balancing well moments of tension with reflective interludes. If you enjoyed McCammon's earlier work, Boy's Life, you will enjoy this later work.
