Since it is a holiday weekend, we are extending the readathon this time around. Did you know that Red Planet Day falls on Thanksgiving this year? Red Planet day is observed in remembrance of the 1964 NASA launch of Mariner 4. This was the first spacecraft to land on Mars. It took nearly 8 months to travel to Mars and made a fly-by of the red planet on July 14, 1965.
