I started this book several months ago and just had too many books in the queue. I had to return it to the library after I had read about 100 pages. I'm glad to be coming back to it again.
I’ve technically already read this, but if I have time will jump in and reread. It’s long but it goes quick!
From what I remember, my first impressions were that I liked the voice of the main character, and the stakes in the book feel high right away. I also loved the feel of the world building in this one.

It's fitting that there is a board game being played at the beginning of this book - I just started it and it feels like I stepped inside a dark and eerie puzzle game of some kind. I’m moving through this mysterious world gathering pieces that don't have an explanation right now but seem to be leading towards…something. And I have a feeling the other "players" in the game (the characters) know something I don't - something massive and possibly terrifying, haha. I’m so excited to keep exploring and find out what it is!!

This story does not always go as I would have expected, which I have always loved in a book.
About 10% in and really excited about where this is going!But...
...why is it always over-powered orphans in a malignant situation? I BITE MY THUMB AT THEE, CHARLES DICKENS!
The "orphan as hero origin story" thing is a bit a meme/joke in DnD/fantasy RPG circles. If you've played Baldur's Gate 3, you will find a couple of easter egg regarding it, even one character telling a grief-stricken child (view spoiler). I kind of lost interest this this book 1/3 in, despite the dramatic event that just took place. Tempted to shelve as DNF until I can muster motivation again for this kind of paint-by-numbers bloated male power fantasy story.
