Hannah | 3326 comments This was quite a fun, fast read that didn’t take itself too seriously as a thriller / detective story. Charlie Howard is a writer who supplements his income by stealing on commission. In this case, he is hired by an American to steal two small monkey statues to match the one he already owns. When Charlie finds the American badly beaten and his original monkey statue missing, he sets out to solve the mystery. This book was barely believable, but I actually didn’t mind that too much. I liked Charlie as a character, and I also really liked Amsterdam as a setting, though I did feel that the supporting characters were not particularly developed. The ending was very reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s books, but my main problem with this was the copy-editing – the copy I read was full of mistakes, which I found quite distracting as I was reading.

Karin | 9250 comments I'm glad you liked this more than I did. I hope you like the others as well.

Theresa | 15664 comments I really enjoyed this when I read it earlier this year. It is quite derivative but I always enjoy these heist type books - and I loved the whole thing with his agent!

I read it in hardcover - I owned a copy- and it had no editing or proofing issues that I recall. I have another of the series around here - probably the one in Paris - that I will find and read at some point.

I also read the novella The Good Thief's Guide to Christmas - which was great fun.
