Drace (dracenines) | 7569 comments There’s an odd ISBN/edition issue going on with a specific edition of the book House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... - This edition has its ISBN-10 listed as 0393304697. This is not a valid or existing ISBN-10 number. It doesn’t correspond to any existing ISBN-13 as all valid, existing ISBN-10s do. Additionally, this edition is otherwise blank; no cover art, no format, the publisher’s name is all lowercase, even the title is incorrect. And somehow, this edition’s edit log is completely blank: https://www.goodreads.com/book/edits/...

However, there is another edition of the book with an ISBN-10 that is extremely similar: House of Sand and Fog, ISBN-10 0393046974. Compare the ISBNs:

Valid ISBN-10 Edition: 0393046974
Invalid ISBN-10 Edition: 0393304697

The invalid edition’s ISBN has an extra 3, which means the final digit (4) gets cut off. It is extremely likely that the invalid ISBN is a typo of the valid one. As such, these editions need to be merged.

Additionally, these editions also list 0393046974 as their ISBN-10 and need to be merged as well:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Once the merge is complete, the book’s information should be as follows:

TITLE: House of Sand and Fog
AUTHOR: Andre Dubus III
ISBN-10: 0393046974
ISBN-13: 9780393046977
ASIN: 0393046974
PUBLISHER: W. W. Norton & Company
DATE PUBLISHED: February 17, 1999
ORIGINAL PUBLICATION DATE: February 17, 1999
NUMBER OF PAGES: 365
FORMAT: Hardcover
EDITION: First Edition
DESCRIPTION [transcribed from the book jacket]:

In this page-turning, breathtaking novel, the characters will walk off the page and into your life. And a small house will seem like the most important piece of territory in the world.

On a road crew in California, a former colonel in the Iranian Air Force under the Shah yearns to restore his family’s dignity. When an attractive bungalow comes available on a county auction for a fraction of its value, he sees a great opportunity for himself, his wife and children. But the house’s former owner, a recovering alcoholic and addict down on her luck, doesn’t see it that way, nor does her lover, a married cop driven to extremes to win her love and get her house back.

Dubus has an extraordinary ability to get us inside each of his characters, to see the world as it is for each of them. These are people with ordinary flaws, people just looking for a small piece of ground to stand on, driven by the same needs into inevitable conflict – a conflict in which even the reader, rooting for all of them, has no safe haven.

Unfolding relentlessly from its tense and colorful first lines, House of Sand and Fog is a narrative triumph. It turns both the traditional immigrant success story and a modern love story upside down with a heartrending outcome, in a masterstroke of American realism and Shakespearean consequence. It is an American tragedy, and a shockingly true picture of the country we live in today.

EDITION LANGUAGE: English
COVER ART: The art that is currently on the edition with the valid ISBN.

Drace (dracenines) | 7569 comments Thanks very much. One last request: could you please put 0393046974 in as the ASIN on the new edition as well? It's Goodreads policy that if an edition has an ISBN-10 it also goes in the ASIN field, and on top of that it will help prevent the bot from assigning any incorrect ASINs to that edition.

David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments I'm afraid not even support can move an ASIN, only developers can. I don't think it is worth the bother.
