Well, I wasn't expecting more Nick Nowak for a while...but that's my go to.

Just don't know if I'm up for the heartbreaking book, or if I jump around in the series.
One good thing about Nick, I can pick it up anywhere in the series and love every moment of it.

Review: Luckily this isn't my first Jackie North book so I know how great she is now. This book has most of the flaws found in a writer's first book, but for me it's the fact this story doesn't make any sense that kills it. I did enjoy the scenes set in world war 1 but not so much in the present.

I knew what was coming, so it wsn't a shock this time. But I think I feel the stab deeper each time I read it.
It's been a while,

I was not expecting that first line. At least not like that, and not so SOON.



I started the book, expecting a fun Nick book. Instead I got stabbed in the gut, from the beginning.



I already loved the Nick Nowak series, and considered it a favorite...but this skyrocketed my opinion. The Nick series has always had substance, but this here was the meat and potatoes to the meal. They have never been pretty little romances. The series are about a Nicks life as a whole, not just a love interest. (view spoiler)[Now, I liked Harker, but I never love loved him. I rooted for him, because I though he was good for Nick. I was heartbroken because Nick was heartbroken. (hide spoiler)] I think the series is stronger because of this book.



Nick coped pretty well while he had a purpose. He hurt, but he kept going.



Now that his goal has been met, IDK what he'll do. I can't see him going back to his regular scheduled program. I think things are going to get a lot darker for Nick, before they get better.



I can't wait to continue on to the next book. This was an emotional one, and I expect there will be more in the future. This book, just bumped the series from low on my all time favorites, to pretty high up there. As much as I try to spread the books out over a little time, I don't think I'll be able to. I need to know how Nick is doing.

Re-read 4/29/19
This is the catalyst that started a huge change in Nick's life. Since I've read ahead, I know Nick will never be the same. Don't worry, it causes him to grow, not just curl up in a ball and become boring.

Even knowing what was to come, it still broke my heart to watch Nick's break.

Of course, with Josh Lanyon the mystery was full of suspense, and the historical aspects was excellent. I loved the stylized 40's noir era storytelling.The details were great! All my senses were engaged, I was there with the times, the sense of war, the fear of exposure. Doyle and Spain's relationship have great potential for an awesome series. I want more!

I’d forgotten how great this series is…. Second reading just as good as the first!

Another all stars for the second book of this series. The dynamics of characters, the banter, the hot sex....no let down done here! Crane and Stephen are rapidly becoming my favorite couple. And I love how much Merrick's personality adds spice to the mix of personalities.
