I think the ending lowers the stakes some in favor of a joke, but the actual ceremony was quite intense with quite a few plot twists.

I've just realised it's not Lovecraft I've been reading - it's supernatural Victoriana Le Carre!- Fate of the world determined by a few individuals engaged in subterfuge, plot and counterplot.
- Doing ghastly things for the greater good (Jack's shopping trips). - Detente between opposite sides (Snuff and Graymalk).
- Referred to as 'The Game' by those on the inside.
- In the end the efforts of the POV character turn out to be largely irrelevant with the most telling contribution being made by a chracter that doesn't get much page time (Bubo).
