Sam’s entire family, as well as Nick’s (including Laine and Graham) were included in the sweep. Since Angela was babysitting Gonzo’s son Alex, he was included, too. Why couldn’t they release Alex? Was there any other way to deal with this kind of threat?

I was asking the same question, Jonetta. It's not like Alex can tell anyone where Nick has stashed everyone. They could have easily removed the baby and returned him to Gonzo and Christina.

This actually made sense to me.
The Secret Service have protocols in place and keeping everyone, including Alex, in the safe location makes sense. Once they were able to release Alex, safely, they did.

It seems reasonable to me. Someone could have spotted Angela with Alex and used him as leverage.
