Bopeep (bopip) | 1091 comments It's been only a month and I forgot all the places names omg. After the first three chapters I could remember some but I have one question between Jia and Daxi. Which is the city and which is the country/region ? :')

I'm so glad we have Kang's POV, because I was curious about his motives.
Oh, and I love the girls trip, even if it's not on the best of conditions haha

Jen K | 1547 comments Jia is the city and Daxi is the country. I also forgot quite a bit.

Didn't Kang promise that he wasn't there to take down the princess? I'm sad that he really was there on his father's request.

The travel will be interesting. I need to visit China someday.

Jen K | 1547 comments Through Chapter 6, honestly I get it that Ning's dad is staying to care for community. He knows that they are capable of managing themselves. I forgot how young the characters are in this one.

The site that they visited was terrible. I hope that Kang understands what his father means by sending an envoy. He needs to figure how what he is going to do and soon.

Bopeep (bopip) | 1091 comments Ning is so selfish with her father... She want him to herself, to protect her, but I bet he prefers to stay behind and not start a great adventure and try to protect the people in the village if they're attacked.

Kang's father has a big plot here... Hasn't he? Even if Kang has no clue. When will Kang disobey him? Hmmm

Jen K | 1547 comments Exactly, the dad can't do much for his daughters at this point.

Kang's father does not sound good. Kang has to disobey him eventually.

Jen K | 1547 comments Through chapter 9:

Ning is so young. The General is so evil.

Bopeep (bopip) | 1091 comments I'm still on chapter 9 but I was gonna say that too! The General is too evil for a YA book, the ways too explicit. I'm not complianing, it's just I'm not used to it for a YA fantasy.

I was thinking what has happened to Shao, he finally appears. Let's see what role he takes in this one.

Jen K | 1547 comments Through chapter 12:

Honestly I'm getting annoyed with Ning. She is just so angsty and I'm not loving the constant internal monologue. I get that she is fighting for her life and the country against an evil demon serpent but the mental epiphanies while she yells at children and treats her sister like a child isn't doing it for me. I want to go back to the tea ceremonies. Those are the best parts.

Not even sure what to do with Kang at this point stuck in a ceremony learning how terrible his father is. Hope his storyline progresses a bit faster.

Bopeep (bopip) | 1091 comments Though it's slow, I like Kang's POV and wondering who is sending him messages. Is some traitor to his father or is someone trying to know where his loyalties lie?

Also, if the Serpent has a human messenger I believe it would be Chancellor Zhou? He is as chaotic as the serpent, and we don't even know what he's after.

Ning is melodramatic, always thinking people say things of her because she's a commoner or they don't believe in their magic. Just... Ugh

Jen K | 1547 comments Through chapter 15:

Yes, glad that Kang has someone to work with now. I'm so sad that others from the kitchen were killed. The kitchen folk were the best.

Definitely the Chancellor is the serpent or the main messenger! Evil man.

Hoping that Ning will improve when on the new journey without the others.

Jen K | 1547 comments Through chapter 18:

Good for Shu! Ning really needs to get over herself.

Glad that Kang is starting to use his brain too though it felt risky for him to take the text to the scholars. The Chancellor really is no good.

Think it would be fascinating to be in the middle of a bamboo forest!

Bopeep (bopip) | 1091 comments I thought about you when Shu did not accept to not go with Ning lol

Wondering what's the connection between Ning and the serpent...

Looking forward to see Kang and his problems. Do you think it is a trap?

Jen K | 1547 comments Through chapter 24:

Poor Shu! I really hope that she is healed when this is all over. I still really like the bamboo. Maybe the night dreams when she saves Ning means that there is still a connection.

Found it interesting that the Wulan monastery isn't fully taken over by the serpent. How did he get some and not others?

I'm a bit stressed by the ending of chapter 24. (view spoiler)

Bopeep (bopip) | 1091 comments Yeah, it seemed Shu had a lot of power if she had the idea of the antidote.

Maybe the Wulan monastery was protected, but not the soldiers out of it?

About chapter 24...if we're right and the Chancellor is the serpent, maybe he knows where Ning is after the nightmare?

I'm scared, because I think brother Huang will die somehow... Not sure about Shu :/

About chapter 24...if we're right and the C..."

Me too! As soon as he said that he was going to marry his sweetheart after this mission, I knew he was doomed!

Bopeep (bopip) | 1091 comments Hahah yeah! That's something to say to doom you.

Jen K | 1547 comments Through chapter 27:

I'm excited for Ning and Kang to go off on this quest. Of course they will be successful together but also hopefully they can use the power/ relic for good.

I think part of my slight annoyance is the overwriting of the author. She explicitly over explains everything leaving not much engagement for the reader.

Bopeep (bopip) | 1091 comments I don't know why I didn't think they would go on a quest together? But I like it, they can - if they want- talk. But Ning is so stubborn to do it *sigh*

Hmm I didn't think about it, the writing style feels very younadultish. I think my problem are Ning chapters and her being emotional.

Bopeep (bopip) | 1091 comments Chapter 33: Wow. I was surprised that Kang could go into the Shift with Ning. He still thinks his father doesn't know what's happening but, what if he does and doesn't care?

I liked the chapter with the Hermit, it was so quiet and dreamy... I like this kind of characters.

But we're in almost 75% and I don't see the ending for this. What will happen in so little pages?

Jen K | 1547 comments I got a bit behind. Have a library book that is about to expire. I will catch up soon!

Jen K | 1547 comments Catching up! Through chapter 33, yes I like that the hermit kept Ning busy making dinner. I'm not sure the the general will believe or care that he is under the influence of the serpent. Not sure how this will end.

Bopeep (bopip) | 1091 comments I've decided to finish it today because I had a lot of pending books ^^'

I still don't know how to feel about the book, so I'll wait for you to say anything~

Jen K | 1547 comments Me too! Read through chapter 40, mostly just gearing up for the big finale. Will definitely finish today.

Jen K | 1547 comments I finished last night! The ending was a bit more brutal than I expected.

Her writing style started to grate on me a bit but I was glad to make it to the end.

Bopeep (bopip) | 1091 comments Yep, the first book was so different from the second one.
I prefer the first one, the second had lots of info about the gods but not really, and sometimes I was still confused about that.
