Jackie | 1489 comments Started tonight and read thru chapter 24. This is different because Joona isn’t in the first part of the book, focusing instead on the hypnotist from the first book. Really enjoying so far.

Kirsten | 1236 comments I’m starting today after teaching. The early part of the week is always busy for me, and I finished my last 2 books for the Scavenger Hunt first.

Jackie | 1489 comments No rush. I'm reading another book and alternating between the two.

There is a murder scene at the beginning that is very intense. I think these two authors are really good at suspense. The book is also a continuation of the one before but I don't think it will have a big impact if you haven't read that one.

Kirsten | 1236 comments This is sadly lacking in Saga Bauer!

Jackie | 1489 comments I know! She's my favorite character and so far, only a very small part.

Jackie | 1489 comments I'm 63% in. Joona seems to be the only one with a brain in the whole cast of characters. I can't stand Adam and the rest of the police don't seem to have a clue what they're doing.

Kirsten | 1236 comments I’m a little ahead of you and will finish today. Joona is always nearly superhuman in his strengths and smarts.

I didn’t much like Adam either, but Erik is one of my least favorites. I didn’t like him in The Hypnotist and I like him even less here. He’s lucky to have Joona on his side.

Kirsten | 1236 comments I should say I that it’s very intense and I real feel for a lot of these characters, especially Rocky.

Jackie | 1489 comments I’ll finish today too. I’m not fond of Erik either. Joona is the only character that I like. But it is intense and suspenseful. I didn’t figure out the murderer before Joona.

Jackie | 1489 comments Finished and gave it 4 stars. The ending was very suspenseful as usual for these books. I don't think anyone does crazy as well as these authors. Cliffhanger was rather a bummer though. Have to read the next to see how Joona handles this. Lol

Kirsten | 1236 comments I'm also finished--I'd all it 3.5 but rounded up to 4 stars. I remembered that (despite being a married couple), I don't think "Lars Kepler" is especially good at writing romantic relationships--Joona is nobody's dream man and Erik is pretty awful. And as I said above, I missed Saga.

I also always feel like Joona is pretty superhuman--a genius, the greatest fighter ever, loyal, lucky...I think I like Saga because she balances him.

But despite these niggles, I am as always really impressed with the prose and after the first 150 pages I couldn't put it down. I kept trying to figure out the end, and I got there basically along with Joona but definitely not before. I'm so glad I picked the series back up.

Jackie | 1489 comments Joona does seem a little larger than life. What I found in this book is that the police seemed so incompetent that maybe that’s why Joona seems so extreme. I enjoy the writing and the suspense however. And I really missed Saga too. Still felt like #4 was absolutely the best in the series so far. And Saga had a big role in that one.
