the story

disclaimer: not everything is the same as the book

Five hundred years ago, the war between humans and the fae race of the Sidhe ended, humans reigning victorious. As a punishment for the destruction and torment the Sidhe caused, they were banished to a dark and desolate land. No bright colors, no weather, no sun. A wasteland in its entirety. Slowly, the memory of the creatures started to fade. Their language was lost, their architecture destroyed, and all that was left of them was in children's folktales.

One hundred and fifty years ago a child was Called. Only ten years old, and when she returned, her body was mangled, and her breath was stopped. She was naked, though you could tell when the blood was so plentiful, it acted as a covering. The Sidhe had taken their revenge, taking the lives of children ten to seventeen into their land. You must survive for a day in Sidhe time, but in the human lands, you are only gone for three minutes and fourteen seconds. You don't know when you will be Called, only that you will be. And when you do, you will be alone and bare, only your willpower and your body to keep you alive.

Present day, children in their adolescent years go to a survival college until they are Called. They learn to fight, to make weapons from nothing. They are taught the Sidhe language, and history. Half of the children survive, and the others arrive murdered and tortured. There is nothing to be done about it except to keep yourself alive.

the prepubescent years

Up until nine, children live with their parents. Sometimes they are told early in life, and some live in bliss until their last few innocent days at home. Children tend to celebrate their tenth birthday a week before, for they are required by law to be enrolled and situated in a survival college by the time they turn ten. Because once they do, they are ripe for the Call.

the progression of adolescence

First Years- at ten years old, you arrive at the college. On your first day, you and the rest of the first years will be given a rundown of the history, a detailed description of the call, and assigned to your dorms. You will not sleep in your dorms that night. Instead, you will be drugged at dinner and taken to the woods. You will wake up alone and be chased by teachers disguised as dark forces. This is to simulate the Call, and it is not even close to the horror of the real thing. Two out of ten first years will be called, and most do not survive.

Second years- at eleven years old, you are expected to know basic Sidhe, and how to create a makeshift weapon. You will learn to fight back, instead of just running away like in your first year, because you will need to fight back. More will be called than in your first year, but more will survive. Not many, thought.

Third years- at twelve years old, almost half of your grade will be Called. You will learn how to trap and trick a Sidhe, and you will be fluent in the language. Four out of ten students called will live.

Fourth years- at thirteen years old, over half of your peers will be Called. You know battle, feeling, and language, so you will start to learn of the Sidhe history, and the landscape you will arrive in. Half of the students Called will live.

Fifth years- at fourteen, you are most likely to be called. Your class is a third of what it once was. They have either survived their call, or they are dead. But you are still alive, and you are trained to think like the Sidhe. To beat your enemy, you must know them, and it is not an easy task. The nature of the Sidhe is twisted and vile, but so is your life.

Sixth years- at fifteen, along with your regular survival classes, you now take science and math. You have learned everything you need to know about the Call, so all that's left to do is enhance your knowledge on them.

Seventh years- at sixteen, your grade is diminished to a hundred compared to the thousands it once was. It is mostly like your sixth year, and you are likely to survive.

Eight years- you are seventeen, and you will be called. You are the most likely to live, but it is never a sure chance. All you can do it wait. and wait. and wait.

the way of the Call

You will wake drowsy and alone in a random place in Faerieland. You have only a few second to find your footing before the horn sounds, and they come after you. Making a weapon is risky, and wastes time to run, but if you can do it quickly, do it. And then after twenty four hours, you are sent back home, dead or alive.

In the human world, you are gone for three minutes and fourteen seconds. Pray that someone is around you when you are called. Or don't- it won't save you.

the nature of the sidhe

The sidhe are ghastly creatures. The are tall and bony, and tricky shifters. Once a human arrives in their realm, a horn is sounded and take off on horses and dogs. But they are not horses and dogs- they are Sidhe, contorted into a broken shape of human animals. They were once civilized beings, capable of thought and love, but years trapped in such a wasteland drove them insane. They will hunt you, and if they touch you, you're dead. Their grip is unbreakable, as is their thirst for vengeance. If you are caught, all you can do it hope it's near the end, because if they have time, the Sidhe will play with their prey. Oh, how they love to play.

what happens after

Many people go home, try and live a normal life. They get jobs, get married. More have kids now than in the beginning, more willing since the likelihood of their survival is higher. But never certain. Some survivors go back to teach at the schools, help children to get through the Call. It's up to the person, and now they can have a purpose aside from survival.
