William Lindsey | 27 comments Librarians, I'll appreciate your help. I have managed to post a quotation twice, and would like the quotation to be merged. The quotation is the first quotation at the following url:

https://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes...

It reads,

“Centering the collision and amalgamation of three global baking traditions – Native American, European, and African – over the course of five centuries not only reveals the story of key and beloved foods but also shows how the people of the south came to live together. In the American South, three foodways came together, and they included baking.”

Thank you for assisting, and sorry for the mistake.

Hi William I can only find the version of the quote you linked to - possibly another librarian did this for you without marking it as done in this thread?

If that is not the case please link to both versions.

William Lindsey | 27 comments Thank you, Carol. There are two pages of quotes for that book by Rebecca Sharpless. One of the quotes is on p. 1, and then if you click and go to p. 2, the quote appears again there — a duplicate of that same quote on p. 1.

I appreciate your help!

I ran a search & only one version came up for me.

William Lindsey | 27 comments Is this a fluke that is somehow showing up just when I log into Goodreads, do you think? When I go to the page of quotes labeled "Grain and Fire Quotes by Rebecca Sharpless" and then scroll to the bottom of that page, I see "previous 1 2 next." When I click 2 to go to the next page of quotes for the book, I find the same quotation repeated on that page. This is the url for the page:

I've found them & I am trying to figure out how two quotes that look completely identical to me have been created (usually when you look closely there is a slight difference but I can't see it) & why only one came up when I did a search. I'll have to come back to this sorry, as I want to check before sending it to Support.

If another librarian sees something I have missed, feel free to edit this.

William Lindsey | 27 comments Thank you. I'm sorry this has proven to be a puzzle. If I posted that quote twice, I can't imagine how I did it. There were no quotes for that book when I added my own quotes, so I didn't post a duplicate of something already there. I always do a search first to be sure I'm not duplicating quotes already on a page of quotes for a particular book.

I appreciate your assistance.

I'm honestly baffled. On my original search when I quoted the whole poem it just picked up cen & I got pages & pages.

I will come back to this later.

No need to apologise - just out of interest how did you discover the duplicate?

message 9: by William (new) - added it

William Lindsey | 27 comments I noticed the duplicate when I clicked to the second page of quotations to be sure I had entered all the material I had excerpted from Rebecca Sharpless' book, and right away, saw that a quote that appeared on page one was repeated on page two.

I often find the Goodreads system for adding quotes behaves in a wonky way. Sometime, after I click to post a quote, the program seems to hang up and the quote won't go through. At other times, for no reason I can figure out, I'll suddenly get a message that I have to try again later. Authors that have a long list of books can show up as you enter a quote with all the books nicely alphabetized. Then the next time you enter a quote by that author and click the drop-down list of books to choose your book, they'll suddenly all be jumbled up. Much of the time as I enter quotes, a captcha step also pops up, and and other times it's not there.

Much is mysterious to me.

I think this is probably a system bug. But I'll check again before sending a report to Support & I'll link to this thread.

Sorry for the hassle.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2278 comments I've sent a message to Support. It may take a couple of days to hearback.

Unfortunately I have had a form response from Gr saying I have to clear my cache. I wouldn't have thought if both of us are seeing this that this would be the issue, but I will clear it later today.

You could clear your cache as well if you want.

William Lindsey | 27 comments I'll do that — thanks for that suggestion. That often turns out to be the solution to bugs online, doesn't it, and/or rebooting the computer? Thank you for your assistance, very much.

I have cleared my cache & your quote is still showing on two different pages for me. I'll try support again.

William Lindsey | 27 comments Thank you for reporting. Yes, I had thought this is a system bug and not something that can be solved by clearing our caches or rebooting our computers. I encounter a gamut of problems when trying to post quotes, and they seem built into the system.

I've heard back from a different Staff member & she has forwarded our issue to the developers. Her phrasing made it sound like it was a new issue - or at least the first time she had heard about it.

If you think your issues are bugs you can report to staff here.

But some things of course may be just the way the site works.

Here is the Librarians Manual entry about quotes - which you might find helpful. :)
