Aw, Tamara, hope you feel better. My sinuses have been killing me all day. So I haven't had as much reading time as I hoped, as well. I did get constant reminders to read but I couldn't really focus. Hoping to get in some reading tonight, since I'll probably won't be able to sleep.

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3287 comments Forgot to post my progress last night because it basically came down to a choice between having the time to read vs. spending the time tracking my progress in the various threads, so I chose to read. I ended up reading 80 pages of It's Elementary. I was hoping to finish it off today but it seems unlikely.

Readathons are totally great for motivation! I get "nervous" when I see my goodreads goal lead dwindle and readathons always helps boost my numbers. lol And somewhat envious, I've never worked anywhere where I could read or listen to an audiobook while I worked.

Shelby | 33 comments We are doing amazing! Great work!

I finished my first book, A Cold Night for Alligators. It had a map in the beginning of the book so I used it for thag prompt. I tried updating the spreadsheet on my phone so I apologize in advance if anything is a little wonky.

I haven’t been able to read a ton of pages because the week has been busier than expected. I’m planning on reading a lot on Friday evening (my library books are due on Saturday so that’s another layer of motivation on top of the read-a-thon!).

message 55: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3287 comments 93 more pages read tonight and should be able to finish the book off tomorrow! Hopefully with enough time to get started on something else too

message 56: by Kat (new)

Kat | 568 comments This has ended up being the busiest readathon week ever. I usually have Wednesday afternoons off but ended up having to cover for someone which ate into my reading time. I'm envious of people who listen to audio books. For some reason my brain doesn't pay attention to them so I've never been able to finish one. I did manage to squeeze in some pages before falling asleep and hope to do much better today.

At the half way point we have read 24 books with 11 to go which is amazing. We have also earned 5 of the 10 pencils we need. Go Team Lions!

Rosalind | 89 comments JennH wrote: "I've never worked anywhere where I could read or listen to an audiobook while I worked"

It's unusual for me to be fair; my work usually involves more thinking or writing so have to pay attention. Luckily yesterday I did a lot of proofing and formatting so didn't need to engage with the text.

Hope everyone is also enjoying the books they're reading. We seem to have covered a range of stuff which is really cool.

It all looks good, Shelby. I generally avoid updating on the app myself. It never looks right.

JennH | 564 comments My sinus issues morphed into a migraine yesterday, which seriously hindered my reading. I did manage to finish The Swimmers which was thankfully short, and it helped that I really connected to the second half of the book. I was worried that I still wouldn't be able to read today but despite little sleep, I woke up feeling much better. So reading it is, and tonight I get to head to the library to maybe pick some better books to fit prompts.

@Kat - I hope they make up the afternoon off to you. I wasn't really a big audiobook reader. It was something nice to do with the kids in the car. But the pandemic really upped my audiobook listening, esp with the libraries closed and my book access was really only through libby and hoopla. And I've really just continued since. It's helped with my mental health a lot. And since we've read so many books already at only the halfway point, we can even consider going for a round 2...

@Rosalind - I have indeed discovered some gems. I have really enjoyed Before Your Memory Fades and Every Heart a Doorway, a new to me author.

Hope everyone has a great day, and maybe get in a little reading time! Go Team Lions!

JennH | 564 comments Here's our midterm progress...

If you haven't had a chance to check out the spreadsheet, our report card stands as follows:

History A
Literature A
Math C
Science C
Geography C
Art B
Recess C

Our remaining open prompts for our first round are:

Math (2)
- A book with under 200 pages
- A book with multiple points of view

Science (2)
- A book involving a person in a STEM field
- A book with an animal on the cover

Geography (2)
- A book set on an island
- A book set in the southern hemisphere

Art (1)
- A book featuring a protagonist who has a career in the arts

Recess(2)
- A book featuring a hobby
- A humorous book

Team Lions has read 26 books, and therefore fulfilled 26 prompts, and accrued 6 pencils. Way to go!

message 62: by Shelby (new)

Shelby | 33 comments We are so close! I finished The Husbands to fulfill the humorous prompt for Recess.

I have quite a bit of Butter by Asako Yuzuki to finish reading. I plan to read a bunch Friday and Saturday to finish it. If the hobby prompt is still needed when I’m done, I can put this book for it. It has a lot of cooking in it!

Thank you!! That's actually a huge help, the spreadsheets are always my nemesis in these read-a-thons lol

I just saw you'd said the other day you put in my book for me. I also added it to the plans tab yesterday, so I'm thinking I may have missed where you put it in? It's possible it's in there twice now

I've deleted my entry. I was thinking, though, since the book summary mentions a psychologist, your book could also work for 'a book involving a person in a STEM field.' That's an open prompt we could use a book for...

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3287 comments Just finished off the rest of It's Elementary (120 pages today), but I don't really see a convenient prompt to fit it into?

message 66: by Kat (new)

Kat | 568 comments I finished The Hobbit yesterday and made a start on We Solve Murders. I'm already hooked so looking forward to reading later.

I've put It's Elementary towards a round 2 in Recess. We can re-evaluate over the weekend.

message 69: by Rosalind (new)

Rosalind | 89 comments Just finished Elena Knows which was amazing, and under 200 pages so have slotted it in Maths. Am away from home so sorry if I've made a mess of the spreadsheet by updating on my phone. Hopefully clear what I was trying to do.

You're good, Rosalind. You did not made a mess of the spreadsheet. I'll clean it up, it's just easier on the computer.

JennH | 564 comments What a difference a day makes!

Our current report card:

History A
Literature A
Math A
Science A
Geography A
Art B
Recess B

Our remaining open prompts for our first round are:
Art (1)
- A book featuring a protagonist who has a career in the arts

Recess(1)
- A book featuring a hobby

And we've started a second round with a humorous prompt filled in Art!

Sadly none of the books I'm reading can go towards the open prompts.... But they will add much needed pages and hours.

What we need now are pencils! You've all been really good about logging in your pages and hours. Keep up the great work, team!

message 72: by Liz (new)

Liz Alb | 117 comments Wow, that's amazing! Way to go, everyone. I just finished another book but unfortunately it doesn't fit either of the remaining prompts. I entered it as a second read with a character involved in STEM.

message 73: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3287 comments 107 pages of Lessons in Chemistry tonight. I'm really hoping to get quite a bit of reading done tomorrow/Sunday, but there seems be a good chance that I'm coming down with something. I'm hoping it's just my seasonal allergies playing up which will fix itself overnight and not the pneumonia and/or bronchitis currently going around at work.

message 74: by Shelby (new)

Shelby | 33 comments Go Team Lions!

Last night I finished ‘Butter’ for a book featuring a hobby.

I’m going to the library today so I’ll probably be able to get pages for pencils, but I doubt I will be able to finish any more books…unless I find short ones!

I added your book to the spreadsheet and possible prompts based on the summary, as I haven't read the book myself. Feel free to add or change.

I hope that you don't come down with something as serious as pneumonia or bronchitis! Feel better!

That's perfectly fine. We need pages now. I love to read short books for readathons but the downside is that it usually doesn't give us enough pages for the little things that the mods usually throw at us. lol

message 78: by JennH (new)

JennH | 564 comments I meant to finish up the two books I had going, last night. However, my many late nights caught up to me and I proceeded to conk out instead of reading. So that's my plan for today and to see where I can go from there.

Happy reading, everyone!

message 79: by Kat (new)

Kat | 568 comments I had a tough morning planning my grandma's memorial service so decided I'd earned an afternoon curled up reading. I'll finish We Solve Murders today and should have time for at least one more before the weekend is over. I think I'll switch from my planned read to something easier to get through.

Kat, I'm so sorry for your loss. You do what you need to do. I hope you find some comfort in reading.

message 81: by Liz (new)

Rosalind | 89 comments sorry for your loss Kat

message 83: by JennH (new)

JennH | 564 comments I've juggled some of the books, so that the 'career in the arts' prompt has been filled. Now all the prompts have been filled for the first round. All we need is pages/pencil for Art and we will have aced our report card!

As for a second round, we have 3 prompts filled in Science and 1 prompt in Recess. This is all extra credit. It'll be fun to see what we can do in the home stretch.

Luckily it seems to be just a cold so far, and hopefully passing quickly. I'm hoping to have better luck sleeping tonight, since I was up literally every hour (sometimes multiple times) last night to blow my nose. If I can sleep, I think this could be gone in the next day or two.

I did manage to get some reading done at least! I read a total of 145 pages of Lessons in Chemistry, and hoping to finish it off tomorrow.

Thanks, Erica! I wasn't sure if I could figure out how to copy it but I did. Thanks again! Btw, your team is doing amazing!

message 87: by Erica (new)

Erica | 366 comments You’re welcome. Happy reading!

message 88: by Kat (new)

Kat | 568 comments Thanks everyone. It was a tough day but reading has been a nice distraction. I finished We Solve Murders and Finlay Donovan Is Killing It which makes 5 completed books. I've started on another one and will get some more pages read but doubt I'll finish it. It's after 6pm in the UK so not long left.

Well done everyone for reading so much despite any distractions or illnesses.

message 89: by Liz (new)

Liz Alb | 117 comments 10 pencils! Yay! We did it! Congrats, all!

I just finished a third book for the Literature topic, giving us a C for the second round.

message 90: by Rosalind (new)

Rosalind | 89 comments Yay! Good work everyone.

I'll log any more pages I read tonight but am not going to be able to finish a book to add to our second term I'm afraid.

message 91: by JennH (new)

JennH | 564 comments I shifted a couple more books around so that we could end up with a second A in Literature.

I am going to work on finishing my last book for the readathon, as I have a couple of hours left in my day.

Team Lions, you have all done an amazing job!

message 92: by Shelby (new)

Shelby | 33 comments I’m sorry to hear about your loss as well as everyone who is feeling unwell. I am wishing for healing and am sending everyone lots of love. ❤️

I wanted to be a reading machine this weekend but I’m sorry to say I was not able to read very much today or yesterday.

It has been great reading with you guys this week. Good work everyone! :)

message 93: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3287 comments Managed to finish off Lessons in Chemistry (138 pages read today), although it seems I'm too late since it's already over? (It's still Sunday for me).

Thank you so much Jenn for your help with the spreadsheet and keeping all my info updated for me!

message 94: by Kat (new)

Kat | 568 comments The readathon lasts until the end of Sunday wherever you are so it still counts. The mods brought it in as a rule to make it fair for everyone.

I hope you enjoyed Lessons In Chemistry. I remember loving it.

message 95: by Kat (new)

Kat | 568 comments I moved a couple things around so we've got a second A in science.

message 97: by JennH (new)

JennH | 564 comments 46 books read. 10,004 pages read, 108.35 audiobooks hours listened to. 11 pencils collected. 9 A's earned. Whew! Way to go, Team Lions!

Thank you to everyone for all your reading contributions, big and small. And none were small! I hope the readathon brought distraction, comfort and/or fun to you all, as it does for me. Though I admit I missed watching my shows. Look forward to seeing you all at the next readathon!

message 98: by Liz (new)

Liz Alb | 117 comments Thank you so much JennH and Kat for being our captains, organizing us and re-jigging our spreadsheet to keep us focused. You did an amazing job.
