Enjoy, guys!

I am super happy that my library has this on Hoopla as an audio book! I might miss more than I want to, but hopefully I will be able to follow along with you all.

Angela | 770 comments This is one that's been on my family's bookshelf growing up but that I never picked up. So I'm thrilled to have a go at it now!

My library has it on audiobook while I wait for my copy to arrive in the mail (I'm definitely a physical book kinda girl).

Hmmm….I’ll have to decide if I’m reading this or nottt

message 5: by ✧Bella✧ (new)

✧Bella✧ | 6773 comments I think I'll just not participate this month. I've got a bunch of other books I'm planning on reading, and I'm not feeling very interested in this one anyway.

message 6: by Ava (new)

Ava | 1372 comments I'll try to read this, but I have so much to read. I really want too though. (It's the book I voted for) And it's pretty short. My library has it as an eBook on Hoopla I believe, so that's prob where I'll read it.

Angela | 770 comments I've heard its a tough one, some of the imagery? but I'm excited to give it a fo

message 9: by Ava (new)

Ava | 1372 comments 😆

Angela | 770 comments I cannot type today! 😂

Jasmine (Jazzie) | 2896 comments Surprisingly, Libby had a copy of this book, so I'll be starting it soon, hopefully.

I’ll be starting this book soon. I read it about a year ago and really struggled to get anywhere with it. (I thought it was longer ago than that). It kinda went over my head. I’m hoping to enjoy it more this time.

message 13: by Mary Emma (new)

Mary Emma Sivils | 638 comments I hope to join in with this book! But I’m leaving on a trip pretty soon, so it’ll probably wait until I get back.

Angela | 770 comments My copy came in the mail today!! Its pretty short I was kind of surprised 🫢

Mine feels overwhelmingly long 😂 it’s in a volume with the second two books in the trilogy

Angela | 770 comments That'll do it 😂😂

Angela | 770 comments My thoughts on chapter 1 so far: I love how CS Lewis can portray Ransom's feeling put out and frustrated with his circumstances so well. I think too often authors want to portray their characters as "good people" and so doing don't allow them to be irritated for very long. But he's tired and worn iut, AND got himself into a predicament his integrity won't allow him to just dip out on.

I also don't trust certain people at the moment...

Hope that's all ok to comment on at this point. Anyone else read the first chapter yet?

I might go read it now.

I gave up, guys. I am just not a sci-fi girl.🤷‍♀️ I got about 23% of the way through, and I just didn’t care, so I stopped. I hope you all enjoy it! It seemed like it had a good MC and a good plotline developing, so if you like sci-fi, you will probably like it. I just couldn’t get into. It’s just not my genre.

message 20: by P. Pherson (new)

P. Pherson Arent you the one who picked the book?

message 21: by Kacie (new)

Kacie | 562 comments someone nominated it and it got enough seconds to be added to the botm poll. this one got the most votes. she didn't pick it XD

Angela | 770 comments Oh no Sharon! Thanks for trying anyway! 23% is a valiant effort for it not being your genre. Life is too short to force yourself into a book thats just not working foe you. That and there are always other things to read ☺️

message 23: by Crystan (new) - added it

Crystan M. (crystanmreed) | 170 comments I have read this twice. I'm not a huge fan of this story, and it's my least favorite of the trilogy. I think I'm going to skip this month as I have an ARC to read.

@Angela—there are SOOOO many other books to read! The length of my tbr is one reason I felt ok about giving up.

message 25: by Cari (new)

Cari Legere (carithewriter) | 561 comments I need to read this. It's been several years. I read it back in '21.

Angela | 770 comments Sharon wrote: "@Angela—there are SOOOO many other books to read! The length of my tbr is one reason I felt ok about giving up."

I have definitely been there!

I'm a little more than halfway through and really enjoying it so far. I'm curious if anyone else started it yet?

message 27: by Ava (new)

Ava | 1372 comments I keep meaning to, but I don't actually have a copy of the book. And I don't like reading online, since I'm on here enough anyway. So, I'll try and start it soon.

I’ve read the first page! 😃✋🏼

lol. I’m wanting to get that started/read here in the next couple days and I just keep forgetting.

Angela | 770 comments @Ava I totally get that! I'm not really a screen reader myself.

@Bets 😂 a page is a page at least!!

Angela | 770 comments I finished it!! Wow! So good!!

The imagination and still realistic approach to this story... Blows my mind.

I have often wondered if intelligent life exists on other olanets, but why I end up at "no" is because of sin. Did sin infect those other planets when Eve ate the fruit? I assume yes, well then did Jesis' life death and resurrection also apply to those planets? I .... Dunno.

This book answers those questions for me. I know, its wild, and a lot to claim, and I don't want to spoil anything, but the way I interpreted certain explanations just made a lot *click for me.

Of course I don't take this as seriously as the Bible and still would say there is not sentient life on other planets. But MAN is it fun to think about how it might be possible!!

message 31: by Elisabeth (Bets), ⭒assistant mod⭒ (new) - rated it 3 stars

Elisabeth (Bets) (livingforjesus) | 6942 comments Mod
Yeah I don’t think it’s biblical to have life on other planets.

The M✝️(KALADIN & EPIC & ILIUM & TELEMARKET Ed.) Yeah life doesn’t exist on other planets because Jesus came to save just humans so that’d be wrong for Him to save only us if there are other intelligent creatures on other planets. To me that seems against His nature

message 33: by P. Pherson (last edited Sep 11, 2024 10:30AM) (new)

P. Pherson I would argue that if there is life on other planets, christ will have died for their sins too. The creator has no need to do another sacrifice, the one alone is sufficient.

There actually is life on other planets, and we know it, because we put it there (bacteria is life, and its on the mars rover).

But life out there in the universe...I am waiting for the proof not the speculation.

The M✝️(KALADIN & EPIC & ILIUM & TELEMARKET Ed.) Yes He would’ve died for their sins to if there was other creatures. But He said He came to save only us

Angela | 770 comments Yes. I can't say more unless without spoiling aspects of the book. Sorry to spark a whole debate 😅 my train of thought has been how would the message of Christ have gotten to other said planets and that's where I've hit dead ends, and it can easily turn into some twisted kind of other religions

But if we want to go down all rhose rabbit trails we can but maybe in the debates thread?

The M✝️(KALADIN & EPIC & ILIUM & TELEMARKET Ed.) No it’s ok! I’ve always liked debating this topic 🤣

message 37: by P. Pherson (new)

P. Pherson Perhaps there was no need to say otherwise. He also called a mustard seed the smallest seed, which it isnt, but the meaning was less the accuracy, and more the metaphorical meaning.

Which is to say, if there are zaxians out there, and I will never meet them, why include them in the things you say on earth.

message 38: by Angela (last edited Sep 11, 2024 10:39AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Angela | 770 comments (I will reply in full on the debates thread)

The M✝️(KALADIN & EPIC & ILIUM & TELEMARKET Ed.) But not everything in the Bible is metaphorical. If you start thinking like that then EVERYTHING in there could be metaphorical (which it isn’t) so you have to really think about what is being said and determine if it is metaphorical or not. Usually it’s pretty obvious when something is or isn’t metaphorical

🤩👏👏👏 I was surprised how normal the first chapter was, considering its a sci fi 😂

Yeah. It just felt like I was reading a classic. Which it probably is, isn't it? I really need to read the second chapter, but I've been reading more interesting things. I'm not far enough into the book to be invested in it yet.

Jessica Sprecher | 174 comments I began the book in the wee hours of the morning (aka I think midnight?) and I just finished it! And man, this was such an interesting read....
