Hi Mark
Almost everything is very behind in this group. I am trying to catch up on some of the missed page counts but I am only up to the 26th of August.
Your understanding is appreciated.

Hi Mark
I'm not quite up to your date, but I'm worried I might forget about this request if I leave it any longer.
World Cat doesn't have a page count for this one, but if you can assure me that your count doesn't include advertising material, an extract from another book or blank pages right at the end, I'll be happy to add this.
Also - is this edition Capitalised to German standards?
& World Cat shows an second author but the name isn't on your cover. Is that the case. Eugene H. Peterson. If he just wrote the introduction Gr would give him a credit.

To answer your questions:
Eugene H. Peterson wrote the forward, just like on the original English edition (translated). His name is on the cover "Vorwort von Eugene H. Peterson" but is so dark that you can't see it easily, right under author's name. Translator "from American English" for the whole book is Christopher Groß.
Yes, the book follows the rules of German grammar, including for the Title. German does not randomly capitalize words - all nouns are capitalized and non-nouns are not, even in book titles. First word of a sentence (or subtitle) is always capitalized. Barmherzig is an adjective or adverb and therefore not capitalized.
WorldCat does have a page count for this edition:
"Physical Description: 317 XXXII Seiten Illustrationen 25 cm"
https://search.worldcat.org/title/987... under "Show more information".
They are saying 317 pages with 32 additional pages of photographs (printed on glossy paper in the middle of the book - with plenty of descriptive text). That would mean there are actually 349 pages in the whole book according to WorldCat (352 by my count, but I would count them all, like many librarians do - and, anyway, WorldCat is not always correct, although probably more often than GoodReads).
According to WorldCat, there are 17 libraries with 2 editions of this book, the one closest to me is a mere 426 kilometers away - in Leipzig (from me in Austria). Such is my life here.
Now I would have a couple of questions, if you would have time and be kind enough to answer them:
Does GoodReads use a bibliographic catalogue template like MARC-8 or MARC 21? That would make it so much simpler and faster for librarians to add book information in a standardized way. Updating page count, for example, should only take about a minute.
This would also facilitate easy import of catalogue data using, for example, the Z39.50 protocol from international libraries and from sources like WorldCat.
What does it take to become a GoodReads librarian? Seems like you guys could use more of them so that it doesn't take so long to make updates and changes. (Or, Amazon could allow its user base to make some changes themselves - like in the days of Shelfari. ;-)
Anyway, thanks for your help in updating this book's page count.

Hi Mark
We wouldn't count unnumbered inserts in the centre of the book. I can remember the Founder of Goodreads stating he didn't want librarians having to do mathematical sums to add page counts. I'm adding 317 pages, but you said you made a difference of three pages, so if there is something else you think should be counts, let me know.
Edit: Please state what is on pages 318-320. Some things we count & some things we don't.
In answer to your questions. I don't think Gr uses any sort of template. If you have read the history of Goodreads the founder had great vision, but a limited budget. You can certainly suggest something like that to Support (Staff) if you want.

Unfortunately page counts should take only 2-5 minutes, but often don't. Many reasons for that, like members thinking that because we are now owned by Amazon we must use their page count (often just an estimate) or including things we don't count. Or only wanting the actual page count for the story. & so on.
To become a Goodreads Librarian you now have to pass a quiz (quite tricky I've been told) & even then there is no guarantee you will be accepted. Most of us have assumed that language skills are important, so make sure you list any languages you speak/write.
Or, Amazon could allow its user base to make some changes themselves
Before my time, but when Goodreads was started anyone could add data. They found that wasn't working out so started the librarian system. Regular members were stopped from adding books themselves in June 2022 - a decision I agreed with. It was amazing Goodreads hadn't been sued. Unfortunately Librarians couldn't keep up with the resulting deluge, so then Goodreads/Amazon unleashed some new bots that hadn't been fully tested. A lot of damage done to the database.
Here is a link with info on how to become a librarian.

Thanks for making the requested change. And thanks especially for your honest comments and kind answers to my questions.
I think I will spare you my thoughts about GoodReads, except that I think not being able to add books means means that as much as a quarter of my books aren't available on GoodReads (either old editions, obscure or foreign language) and that makes the platform useless for keeping track of my own books or even including many books in my annual reading goals. Unfortunately, when the world's biggest retailer buys and kills better software, there is no other good choice out there. Frustrating!
I will look into becoming a GoodReads librarian, which might help me a little. I guess that would allow me to add books and editions. I have catalogued many thousands of books in the last few years, mostly for a school library, which is a lot of work. I would hate for it all to just be a waste of time when Amazon implements some new and arbitrary policy which destroys one's work.
Rant over. Thanks again and enjoy reading!

That's ok.
Your missing books may be too old, but if they are new enough to search by ISBN try doing that & you may find some.
Otherwise, try making requests in this folder.

Using this template;

This is the folder with the biggest, backlog, but some amazing librarians are trying very hard to catch it up.
