Marcus has become Emperor and Helene his Blood Shrike (right arm) as predicted by the Augurs (seers). Marcus charges Helene to locate Elias (her former best friend and now traitor) and return him for execution. Helene’s position is probably the most treacherous because of the competing pressures on her. Elias and Laia are determined to rescue Laia’s brother Darin from Kauf prison. He has a secret that could help the rebels.

There is lots of blood, treachery, betrayal, and magic along the way. And a couple of major surprises that I didn’t see coming. Some things get resolved and others develop leading to a need to read the next book. Very good series.

I really liked some of the surprises too, even the ones I hated, if you know what I mean. This was a very fast read even though the book is much longer than others I’m reading this month.
