Milena | 3 comments Hi, since I've just recently started reading Chinese novels, more specifically xianxia, I'm new to this and I was looking for some recs that had a good and interesting plot, but at the same time well written and intricate characters, like the novels by MXTX.
Ever since I read her novels I don't get satisfied anymore with the books I used to read, so I need help!
I've heard that A thousand autumns is pretty good, but I don't know anything about it. Would you recommend it? I'm open to all kinds of recommendations.
Also, it doesn't have to be a danmei, I'm just looking for a good plot and characters! And set in ancient China, contemporary novels aren't really my cup of tea.

Nana | 36 comments Well, personally I’d recommend Meatbun’s the husky and the white cat shizun as well as remnants of filth! (as long as you’re fine with the TWs). These unfortunately haven’t been published to completion yet however even with the volumes currently out I find the stories worth reading!Meatbun is incredible, everything matters and connects sooner or later and when it does it hurts so bad. If you’re looking for pain and suffering in a good (?) way I’d recommend. ~\(≧▽≦)/~

My favorite historical danmei that is not MXTX:

1) QJJ or Ballad of Sword and Wine by Tang Jiu Qing- the perfect danmei IMO. It has everything- politics, romance, military genius, incredible characters, amazing world building, etc. Only one volume is officially published (there will be 8) but the epub is out there if you want to search for it… This is ancient China but not xianxia so it might not be what you are looking for.

2) YUWU- Remnants of Filth by Meatbun . PAIN but so so so good. Only 4 volumes out so far with 7 total to be published.

3) ERHA- The Husky and His White Cat Shizun by Meatbun. Pain as well but also so so good. Five volumes out of 11 but 6th volume releases tomorrow! Same author as YUWU.

4) Thousand Autumns by Meng Xi Shi. Competed five volumes. Politics and slow burn, minimal romance. Very well written, lots of wuxia- not quite as much xianxia but it’s there.

5) Joyful Reunion by Fei Tian- ancient China, heavy historical/political with very complex characters. A masterpiece in my opinion. It’s available online but I’m not sure where as I read a fan translation epub.

6) Nan Chan by Tang Jiu Qing- you will have to search for this one online but it has everything you are looking for- xianxia and is beautifully written (the same author as QJJ). It is being published in English but depends on what country you are in on how you can get it. Yiggybean sells it in the States but if you Check the publisher Rosmei’s website they can direct you on how to get it wherever you are.

7) Married Thrice to a Salted Fish- possibly recency bias for me but this one is just such a gem. It’s on Chrysanthemum Garden where you can read tons of BL web novels for free. It’s transmigration, historical, political but not quite xianxia

Hope I didn’t overwhelm you but I can be very passionate when it comes to recommendations haha

As Nana recommended, always check TW!

Milena | 3 comments Thank you! This definitely helps, and yes, I love angst, pain and suffering in books. Obviously I feel bad for the characters, but if there's no pain it's difficult for me to fully enjoy a book. I need the angst!!
But I'll definitely check all the novels you just suggested and they sound so good as well. So thanks again!

Thank you, Stacie, for a really usefully list of good series. Especially, great to highlight Chrysanthemum Garden. I didn’t know about that resource. It looks amazing!

Both Mistakenly Saving the Villain and Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know are xianxia novels with excellent plots and characters. Copper Coins is xuanhuan novel and I found it a bit similar to Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. The plot was enjoyable and interesting and the protagonist is a mischievous dragon who tries to be intimidating but he's actually a cutie and wants to make a certain Buddhist monk lose his cool but all in all he stays unsuccessful.
