Duplicate author pages, unable to combine or edit them

Hi, I am a librarian, but I have no idea what to do here, I hope someone more experienced might help me figure out what's wrong here..

I tried to add a new edition of a book written by Dhan Gopal Mukerji. However, there was an error that didn't allow me to add the book: "Author name lower has already been taken" I have no idea what that means. (For now, I have added the book with the author D.G. Mukerji - it appears this way on the cover anyway..)

Furthermore, I have discovered that there are at least two author pages with the same name (Dhan Gopal Mukerji), both with only a single space between the names, making them identical. I tried combining them, but it wasn't possible the usual way.

There are several editions of the same book added with the wrong spelling of the author, and the same problem is there - I cannot edit the name.

I thought someone might have encountered the same problem and might know how to deal with it. But it does seem like an unusual problem

It has suddenly become quite common over the last few days, as a matter of fact.
We just can't do anything about it.
