...cats? | 470 comments Can anyone recommend nonfiction history books (preferably about the modern era, late 19th - 20th century) by authors who are not American or British? I'm specifically looking for books that are well-written and not so heavily academic in their writing style. Any topic is okay and I'm fine with biographies, but I'm not interested in memoirs.

Wil | 29 comments I can't remember if it was a historical fiction or nonfiction, but "Dust of Eden" by Mariko Nagai. It's a verse novel of the story of a young Japanese American girl and her/her family's experience in an internment camp during WWII.

Also "Night" by Elie Weisel (though I've heard it described as both a biography and a memoir so I'm not really sure)
