Very different to what I imagine from Tolkien. The first story tells the story of a dog turned into a toy after biting a wizard.
First quarter takes us through the story of Roverandom, the bewitched dog. Everything happens quickly and with little explanation behind events. We seem to be at the whim of the wizards.
hey Karen :) are you reading a copy of this or listening? i have the full-cast dramatization audio and it's so good 4%

I’m reading it, but I can imagine the audiobook would bring it to life a little more. It seems rather dated, but it’s interesting.
Second story of Farmer Giles pits our hero against the wily dragon. I see elements of Smaug - can’t help wondering if some of these stories have found their way 8th what I think of as the traditional Tolkien canon.
69% - the third story of the cook and his apprentice is my favourite so far. I love the way the two worlds combine, and there is an attempt to teach someone a thing they need to learn.
Finished. Review on home page. Certainly of more interest than I imagined (thinking of references to moments in Tolkien’s other work) though it feels a little dated.

I think the folly of the humans involved is a common feature in many of these stories.

The book is the perfect opportunity for fans of Middle-earth to enjoy some of Tolkien’s often overlooked yet most creative storytelling. With dragons and sand sorcerers, sea monsters and hobbits, knights and dwarves, this collection contains all the classic elements for Tolkien buffs of all ages.
Roverandom is the story of a toy dog who becomes enchanted by a sand sorcerer. He gets to explore the world and encounter strange and fabulous creatures.
Farmer Giles of Ham is the tale of a fat, unheroic farmer who, having unwittingly managed to scare off a short-sighted giant, is called upon to do battle when the dragon Chrysophylax comes to town.
The Adventures of Tom Bombadil tells, in verse, of Tom's many adventures with hobbits, princesses, dwarves and trolls.
Smith of Wootton Major takes us on a journey to the Land of Faery, thanks to the magical ingredients of the Great Cake of the Feast of Good Children.
Leaf by Niggle recounts the strange adventures of the painter Niggle, who sets out to paint the perfect tree.
