“So… does that mean… we’re dating?” She asked, pausing a few times, unsure of what to say.
“Ok. I’ve only ever dated one person before…” she said, trying to remember her.
“I actually haven’t ever dated anyone before.” Anjali admitted. Though she’d had many crushes over the years, she never got the courage to confess.
“Well, I’m happy to be the first one!” She said happily.
She held her hand, smiling. She blushed slightly, since she hadn’t held someone’s hand in a while.
Anjali’s headache worsened before bettering, causing her smile to fade for a second before coming back.
“It’s your head, isn’t it.” She said, a concerned look on her face. “Why did you take my pain? I could’ve handled it.”
“I don’t need help.” She said, knowing that was a lie.
“It’s ok. I just don’t want you to have pain because of me.” She said, taking Anjali’s hand that way rubbing her head.
“Why do you get so many migraines?” She asked, concerned of the look on her face, squeezing her hand.
“It’s because I got a bit of head trauma as a kid.” Anjali responded as she stared down at her feet.
She frowned. “I’m sorry.” She said. “What happened.”
“How?” She asked. “And how many?”
“Mostly from learning gymnastics throughout the years, but also from some bullying when I was a kid.” Anjali replied, looking over at Ja’naya.
“You were bullied?” She asked, wondering about her past.
“I was one of the only non-white kids in my small rural town,” Anjali’s voice sounded sad. “Of course I was bullied.”
“I’m sorry. I lived somewhere where my family was the only black family. It was never fair. They would steal from us and beat me and my little brother up.” She said.
“It’s not fair that people can do that and get away with it.” Anjali said smooth a sigh. “I’m sorry that you and your brother had to deal with that. At least things are a bit better here.”
“Yeah.” She said, trying to hold back tears.
“Thanks.” She said, hugging her back. “My brother…”
Anjali continued to hug her, patting her back as they did. They waited for Ja’naya to continue, not wanting to make her feel pressured into telling her.
“He… he didn’t make it to camp. He couldn’t run fast enough.” She said, starting to sob.
Anjali’s expression was one of complete empathy. She could understand exactly what Ja’naya was feeling and had felt when her brother had passsed. “Hey, it’s okay, it’s okay.” She repeated.
She cried with her head rested on Anjali’s shoulder, listening to her soothing words. But was it all okay?
Tears were still on her cheeks, but they had stopped coming out of her eyes. Her eyes where red from crying, and she didn’t really want to talk.
Anjali brushed their thumb against her cheek, wiping away the remaining tears. “Do you want me to walk you back to your cabin?”
She shook her head. “I’d rather stay here.”
She held her hand for a while, staying silent.
“I’m sorry for crying. It’s not something I do often, at least around people.” She said, feeling the slightest bit of guilt.
“I don’t only cry sometimes.” She admitted. “I’m always crying. Whether it’s on the inside or the outside.”
She held her tight, not letting go. She refused to cry again.
