Marine | 7 comments Hi! As you may have heard, Lisa Jewell will be releasing a bonus chapter for her novel None of This is True and I don't know what to think of that... I've read the book a few months ago and wasn't too impressed by it.. The ending felt a bit underwhelming to me. So when I initially heard about the bonus chapter I was quite happy about it and told myself that it might make me like the book better. But the more I think about it the less convinced I am. What I mean is, if your book is good enough you don't need a bonus chapter to make it better or to please your readers do you? Besides, this bonus chapter will be included in a limited Christmas edition that will probably cost more than the regular one and to me it's just capitalism at its worst! I also learnt that she did the same for The Night She Disappeared. I loved this novel, didn't know there was a bonus chapter and have no intention of reading it. But again, books don't need a bonus chapter if they're good enough. To me, it's just a way of making more sales in an articifical way and using the excuse of "pleasing the readers" (which encourages a form of "after-sales service" that doesn't belong in literature in my opinion)
What do you think of it? I'd like to hear your opinions on this :)

I agree with much of what you said and have no interest in plunking down money for a bonus chapter. Now if it was released for free I would probably read it just out of curiosity to see what Jewell thought was missing that needed saying. It's an unusual move, though. There are many books that generate controversy/dissatisfaction around its ending but not many authors write "bonus chapters."

Ann (annrumsey) | 16925 comments Marine, I am not a fan of paying extra for very short fiction. The small bite of a story is appealing when a connection to a favorite book series, but as you said it often ends up just adding up more dollars spent that the original book cost. When you access your books from a library system those shorts or bonus chapters usually aren’t included for free.
