No one is more surprised than Avery Grambs when she learns that billionaire Tobias Hawthorne has left his fortune to her in his will. Avery is struggling to get by. Her mother is dead, her father has been missing for years, and her guardian half sister is on the rebound with her abusive boyfriend, and she's living out of her car. The will comes with one stipulation that was created by Tobias before his death: the requirement to live in the mansion for at least a year and to not kick any member of the Hawthorne family out.
Tobias has four grandsons who have grown up playing his games and solving riddles. The caretaker Nash, aloof Grayson, daredevil Jameson, and charismatic Xander. With all four brothers also trying to figure out the riddle, Avery realizes she could be in trouble. With no one to trust, Avery must solve the mystery before it’s too late to win the fortune.
The best part of this book was the question of why Avery has been named in the will. The clues left behind by Tobias Hawthorne are so intricate and strange, and it’s fascinating to watch them unravel.
I had never heard of this book before searching for something tagged "games". This is Book 1 of a trilogy, so don't expect a wrapped up ending. It had compelling characters, an intriguing plot, and a complex mystery which made it a fun reading experience.
I too enjoyed this - it was nim8bated for an Edgar the year it came out and I read it as part of our Edgar reads. I have the 2nd and 3rd in the TBR and hope to get to one at least with a Steeplechase tag.
