Hi Oleander, with a title like that how could I not choose Ask Not The Kennedys and the Women They Destroyed by Maureen Callahan ? Your bonus/palate cleanser is Murder at the Blueberry Festival (Beacon Bakeshop, #3) by Darci Hannah .

Happy reading!

P.S. Sorry for the delay in picking for you.

Oleander | 245 comments Thank you, Marty. I won Ask Not in a giveaway and am looking forward to reading all the dirt. And you chose a perfect palate cleanser for a late summer read.

It took me a couple of tries to get into it at first, but I ended up loving The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton . I hope you do too.

Yay! I'm so glad. The next two in the series were even better IMHO.

Best Present Ever? by M.A. Innes
Rating: 2 Stars

I don't recommend this. No depth, lots of telling instead of showing. Characters not believable. There are better Daddy/little books out there.

Fake It 'til You Make Out (Love & Luck, #1) by Isla Olsen
Rating: 2 Stars
Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Present tense! I am not a fan of present tense and first person combined. >.< Plus the book wasn't that funny. The text dialogue was, but the rest wasn't that overwhelmingly funny, more like childish crude at times. And it has cheating! If you want a very fast read, then this will probably work for you.

Marty (martymill) | 1306 comments Finished a couple of my picks early!

An Easy Death (Gunnie Rose, #1) by Charlaine Harris - five stars. I never have read any of the Sookie Stackhouse books, I think by the time I got around to those, I was vampired out. This series sounded more interesting and it was. I like Gunnie Rose, she's a tough, smart MC. I'm interested to see where the rest of the goes. Read 8/5/24

Nica's Dream The Life and Legend of the Jazz Baroness by David Kastin - four stars. I had never heard of Nica Rothschild, nor her connection to the New York jazz scene. I really enjoyed learning more about her and her connection to Thelonius Monk. There was a list of songs that had been dedicated to her included in the back of the book which lead me to discover some musicians I wasn't aware of. Read 8/4/24

Kari | 639 comments I finished Murder in Shades of Blue and Green (DS Charlie Rees, # 1) by Ripley Hayes , gave it 4 stars. The writing was different and the mystery was interesting. Thanks for picking it!

A Treacherous Curse (Veronica Speedwell, #3) by Deanna Raybourn

Book - A Treacherous Curse
Author - Deanna Raybourn
Date Read - 8/10/24
Rating 2 Stars
Review - This is book 3 in the Veronica Speedwell Series series. Veronica and Stoker are off investigating another mystery that hits to close to home for Stoker. We find out more about his first marriage and what happened for it to end which ties in to the circumstances surrounding the current mystery. Usually the dialogue and story line between Stoker and Veronica is normally pretty hilarious, but this was a bit dull. The series is ok, but it's not my favorite. Hopefully the next one will be better.

In the Pass of Ghosts Aug 14 ★★★★
A Darkness Absolute Aug 5 ★★★★

I read this out of order and too soon, so I added another from the series
Neon Prey July 25 ★★★★
Ocean Prey Aug 2 ★★★★★

Marty (martymill) | 1306 comments Finished The Miracles of Prato by Laurie Lico Albanese and I was a little let down by it. I was hoping for more of a sense of the two main characters as people of their time. It seemed a little 'updated' I guess. I really didn't get a sense of the real danger Lucrezia and Filippo were in, nor did it portray either's forced piety believably. Still, it was beautifully written, so I gave it four stars. Read 8/28/24.
