Anaya Ivana | 4 comments If the book is new, how do you choose it? Behind an ugly cover can hide a fascinating story, and behind an attractive cover, a waste of time. How do you choose the book, without regretting that you chose it?

min | 14 comments i kinda look at both like if the cover is pretty thats like almost an instant yes for me BUT i do take in consideration reviews from either here or booktubers that i constantly watch and know have the same taste to me

message 3: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments As there are almost no good novels anymore (these days it's all dystopian, SciFi or fantasy) and our city of 208.000 population has no more bookstores since the pandemic, I only order the few new releases from my favorite authors, not depending on covers.

I agree, I once bought a novel which takes place at the Niagara Falls and had a breath-takingly beautiful cover, but turned out to be so boring.

message 4: by Kai's (new)

Kai's Darling | 660 comments by the reviews. if it's clean, has good reviews, if there's an enemies to lovers (preferably)

f4iryerims ౨ৎ ⋆。˚ | 47 comments both 🤷🏽‍♀️

message 6: by Anshika (new)

Anshika | 13 comments Mostly by covers 😅
But sometimes, my friends' five-star ratings are enough

message 7: by Christine (new)

Christine | 93 comments if I am looking in a bookstore, I definitely will pick up a book by its cover, read what it's about and then if it is something I think I may like, I come on here and look at some reviews. I also watch a lot of booktok videos that make up my TBR lists.

message 8: by Susan (new)

Susan Christ | 31 comments Both but I have to read the synopsis too. It has to be get a greenlight on at least two out of three to be considered. I've also blindly read a book because I like the author or its part of a series.

message 9: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary Crosson | 11 comments Sometimes, I check out the books from my favorite authors. Other times I choose ones from my favorite genre. However, I always read the inside jacket.

message 10: by ♤Lizzy♤ (new)

♤Lizzy♤ (Inactive) | 200 comments Usually recommendations. I enjoy what other people enjoy except for a few times.

message 11: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 2 comments I go by what the vibes of the summary gives me. also helps if my favorite booktubers have already read it

message 12: by Kindle Jenner (new)

Kindle Jenner | 90 comments Reviews and recommendations. A cover has never made me decide to read or not read a book.

message 13: by M.J. Rodriguez (new)

M.J. Rodriguez | 71 comments I choose a book based by my own personal tastes. I have tastes for crime, mystery, history and transportation subjects.

message 14: by Lovely swetha (new)

Lovely swetha | 4 comments I choose my books from both; they mostly come on my feed( Instagram). And I also prefer reading based on my mood or genre.

message 15: by sarah (new)

sarah | 288 comments The cover gets my attention, I read the back find out a little about the book and then I get my GOOD READS app and check out the reviews. The reviews are what helps me choose what I really want to read. I love this app and all the interesting questions the readers have to ask.

message 16: by Nina (new)

Nina | 88 comments by recommendation only!

message 17: by Robert (new)

Robert Robertson (trk06) | 52 comments A cover doesn't do anything for me .I read a lot of reviews , check favourite authors / genres and occasionally friends recommendations

message 18: by Sara (new)

Sara | 69 comments Both. I f I see it in the bookstore for the first time I look the cover but if I heard some recommendation about the book and it's a type that I usually like I'll take it.

message 19: by madzia.koziolek (new)

madzia.koziolek | 67 comments both. If I get a recommendation and the cover is ugly I’ll probably buy it on kindle instead of a paperback. Tho I usually buy books that I see on booktok (but cover is still very important to me)

✨• r e a g a n •✨ | 38 comments If you’re struggling to pick out a book to read, put the options you want to read into “wheel of names” and let it do it for you.

You could also search up the book on TikTok and YouTube and hopefully seeing someone enjoy it will make you want to read it

message 21: by evlove (new)

evlove | 89 comments Bro i picked up The Deer and the Dragon because i like dragons and barnes was closing and the cover was cool. Big mistake lol, theres no dragons and its been taking me so long to get through. But i will prevail as it was a birthday gift 😅😭

message 22: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Rivera | 51 comments I pick up new authors by recommendations/reviews and then I read the insert and finally and finally, the cover.

message 23: by Karen (new)

Karen Terry | 12 comments I chose a book to read by reading the inside of the cover and finding out about the book. Also the title will jump out at me will make me want to read it.

message 24: by Catherine (new)

Catherine P | 8 comments Personally, I almost never like the covers of the books I read. I always take into consideration the recommendations, though.

message 25: by Daniz (new)

Daniz (happygirl53) | 46 comments I just choose a random few (maybe a couple)by reading their backs and cover is like other 50%

message 26: by becs (new)

becs | 178 comments a mix of both, like covers def draw me in, but also the titles. I don't typically go for highly recommdended books from like TikTok for example anymore because they tend to be badly written and extremely disappointing. But if I'm hearing about a book a lot and it has good reviews, mostly on Goodreads then yes I will look into them, and especially if people in my life recommemd them then yes because that's always nice

message 27: by becs (new)

becs | 178 comments lovely how I misspelled recommend wrong twice lol

message 28: by Kaitlyn ✿ (new)

Kaitlyn ✿ My eyes are always drawn to cover when I’m in a book store of course, but it doesn’t always hold true. I wasn’t drawn to the cover of “A Court of Thorns and Roses” but it’s been one of the best books I’ve ever read. But normally if I’m looking through kindle for books I will go by reviews/recs

message 29: by Kate (new)

Kate G | 5 comments I usually just go by title or what the book is about, as that gives me better information and that's what I'm going by I don't always go by recommendations as it does depend on where the recommendation is coming from but I usually go by similar books or the lists on goodreads

message 30: by Lani (new)

Lani Putthoff | 91 comments Recommendations ✨

message 31: by Wyetha (new)

Wyetha (wyesreads) | 229 comments Um recommendations, but sometimes the cover is sooo good (i.e, Home is Where the Bodies Are by Jeneva Rose)

message 32: by Sean (new)

Sean Brewer | 79 comments Recommendations or reviews are usually how I find a new book to read but when the cover is great (Hello Beautiful) it just feels like an extra reason to read it

message 33: by Angelica (new)

Angelica (angelica0731) | 29 comments the cover is definitely what initially draws me to a book, then I decide whether the book is a YES or NO based on the inside cover

message 34: by Hriti (new)

Hriti (grratteful) | 133 comments by its cover, by a recommendation, by the author, by a released movie/series to see if its made good, by a insta post about a random quote(may the whole book but finding that quote is worth it), by extensive google searches, by amazon price filters (low to high coz its month end), by kindle 'picks for you', by random bookstore visits, by whatnot really :P

message 35: by Em (new)

Em | 25 comments Cover first then recommendations/reviews

message 36: by Gypsy (new)

Gypsy (ignited_red_queen) | 25 comments I currently been just trying to pick from my own physical read so it tends to be what's been sitting the longest on my shelves, but I do often go by recommendations especially from people that know my tastes in books. I used to pick by the cover and that isn't always been great.

message 37: by Sam (new)

Sam K (zutara123) | 251 comments i just search around till i see something i think i might like. I have a pretty good idea of what I like in stories. i will read some reviews(both pos and neg) to get a clearer idea of what it will probably be like and if that might be something i'm interested in.

message 38: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments I know exactly what kind of books I like. However, there are less and less appealing novels written over the past 10 to 15 years.

message 39: by Maxine (new)

Maxine (the_iron_maiden) | 12 comments Neither?? And I'm a little baffled at the idea of choosing a book to read based solely on reviews or cover, lol. Not that those are bad things, but it just would never occur to me.

I just look up what the book is about and decide if I want to read it from there. If I vibe with the story's description, or at least find it interesting, I read the book.

(And if I decide I want to own a physical copy of the book, *then* I look for the pretty covers.)

message 40: by Mike (new)

Mike | 107 comments I choose books mostly based on genre. I read physical books most of the time. I love browsing bookstores. In some cases, the cover may attract me to look at a book, but it is never the reason to buy or read one. I browse Amazon the same way. However, I did start two mystery series based on recommendations. Archer Mayor, one of my favorite authors, recommended Paul Doiron on his website. And someone on Goodreads mentioned Martin Limon. Both of those recommendations have turned out great.

message 41: by Light (new)

Light Blue | 17 comments I often chose by the author. If I liked a book of one author, I Check Out the Rest of their books. Currently I read The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman and I am Not disappointed.

message 42: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments Since the pandemic Worcester, MA, has no large bookstore and no movie theater anymore (a city with 208.000 population!).
So I cannot browse very often in bookstores and just order the newly published novels by my favorite authors.

In this day and age one might think that technology is advanced enough to let me know via amazon newsletter when one of my favorite authors has a new book being published, but they don't. Oh well...

message 43: by Anthony (new)

Anthony Brooks (asbrooks88) I literally just check out the genre that I like, and I randomly pick an Author. I have had great luck!

Rissa (rissasreading) (rissasreading) | 177 comments by the description lol

message 45: by Diana (new)

Diana Jaques | 134 comments I usually purchase books from charity shops picking them at random, then I'll just make my way through them.
It's not very often I choose a book by it's cover, but if the blurb entices me I do tend to read it.

message 46: by kevin (new)

kevin smith (proffessor) | 20 comments I. Liked Author/Series
II. Liked Description/Blurb
III. Trusted Individuals
IV. Its a Story and not a Lecture of Author's beliefs

and while I won't judge a book by a cover, I will judge a book by the author's photo

message 47: by Steve (new)

Steve Koyasako | 68 comments I usually choose books based on book reviewers' recommendations.

This Charming Woman (inactive) (tcwreads) | 20 comments recommendations, or if im browsing goodreads and google and find something with an intriguing description.

message 49: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Hundshamer-Moshier | 2 comments I go in completely blind without reading the back at all. So I go off just the look of the cover with the mood I’m in.

message 50: by Natalee (new)

Natalee Smith | 21 comments Both Also Title then read the back
