We have a winner with 9 votes. The August 2024 BOTM will be Could You Not Watch with Me One Hour?: How to Cultivate a Deeper Relationship with the Lord through Eucharistic Adoration, by Florian Racine, nominated by Mariangel.

Given how close the results were for the top two books, and the wide gap between them and the others, and as no one objected to the suggested extra time between voting and reading, the Moderators have decided to read them both, so with 8 votes the September 2024 BOTM will be Poor Banished Children: A Novel by Fiorella De Maria, nominated by Fonch.

The rest of the results were as follows:

Beheading Hydra 4
Eternal Woman 3
Pierre Toussaint 3
Prison Journal 3
Second Greatest Story Ever Told 3
Exogenesis 2
Godhead Here in Hiding 2
Sex and the Unreal City 2
Vipers Tangle 2
Voyage to Apha Centauri 2
Hundredfold 1
Our Lady of the Artilects 1
Wheat that Springeth Green 1

The three books that received only 1 vote each will be placed at the end of the Nominations List. The 5 books at the top of the Nominations List will be added to the Voting List in August.

In August we will choose the BOTM for October. This will hopefully give everyone time to get the books before we start reading them each month.

[Edited to reflect the decision to read the top two books this month.]

In question 3, Fiorella reacts against "period drama [with] characters who are basically modern men and women in period costume."

I agree, and can provide another case: in the 1996 BBC adaptation of "The tenant of Wildfell Hall" by Anne Brönte, Gilbert travels to Helen's home after she returns with her husband to care for him in his last days. Gilbert requests Helen to leave her husband and go with him. This is not in the novel and would have been unthinkable in Brontë's time. This part of the adaptation always annoys me.

It was Steven R. who gave the link, not me! :-)
