Finnegan’s Folly was a mushroom, gold-boom town on New Zealand's wild west coast in 1867, a town founded by the ghost of Mad Mick Finnegan, where anything could happen—robbery and murder, rape and riot—and a lot of it did.

This was the town where Mournful Merry, one-time British Army doctor, made his “strike” with the aid of a drowned pack-horse and a horribly garrotted one-armed prospector; where, by a wry twist in his destiny, he met up with the sinister, shadowy figure from the other side of the world: the man with three identities—who showed an astonishing fourth at the finish—for whose murder Merry had been lynched years before!

This is a story of the days when Te Wai Pounamu—the Greenstone Coast—stirred in a sleep of centuries; and woke with a roar as adventurers from all parts of the world stampeded for the master-lure: Gold.
