Trying to find the title of a book

I am trying to find the title of a book I read in the 1970s about a liquor store clerk who was fired for theft and decided to take a canoe trip down the Hudson. He met a woman who was running from the mob and she inadvertently helps him solve the mystery of the thefts. Anyone know about this book?
