imagine you write a book with the same opening line and ending line, but with different meanings, what would it be?

almas. (diamondxsq) i'm sure someone out there saw those challenges where you start and end a book with the same line, but by the time you get to the end, the sentence has a completely different meaning. what would that be for you?

Reeya⸆⸉ | 56 comments i actually saw this idea, and was like, why not do it! so I'm writing a story and the first line is "Wait for me!" and the last line is the same but written as "Wait for me." and then she commits suicide.

I would kind of do something like "I'm here!" as in lighthearted in the beginning of the novel but in like a hard battle scene at the end like when the character that said that saves another character and while they're dying they say "I'm here."

“Will you be my girlfriend?” He asked, years ago when we were just teenagers, holding a bouquet off lilies. “Yes!” She squeals, giving him a kiss.

“Will you be my wife?” He asks, holding a shimmering ring while down on one knee. “Yes!” I say, throwing myself onto him, my arms hooked around his neck happily.

eliana | 2 comments IVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THIS FOR AGES, it would be i’m going to die, the first line the mc would just be overreacting or having a panic attack or something and then the last line they’d be actually about to die and the book would end before they die

Emma Stauffer | 35 comments The first line would be, “schools out again! It’s summer time!” Like she is excited. And the last would be “schools out again. It’s summer time.” Like her whole life has changed through the story and now she would rather be at school because home is so much worse.

ellie | 14 comments I’ve thought about this a bunch. And i think i would do something like “Bye! See you tomorrow” (two best friends parting ways for the day) and end it with ‘“Goodbye” she says wit her last breath’ (one of the best friends dying)

almas. (diamondxsq) that's so true! all of these are legit so tragic

Pamela | 10 comments Sounds like Don't Fear the Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult. Brilliant song. It's more like a short story when I hear it. Many people mistakenly believe the song is about suicide, but it definitely is not.

loonaplenaaa | 14 comments I laughed as tears roll down my cheeks.
At the beginning, it was the protagonist laughing till tears with friends, but in the end, as none of friends is still there and protagonist is crushed and alone, they cry in defeat, while sadly laughing.

Judith Speed | 208 comments My Cousin Rachel by Daphne Du Maurier has the same opening and closing line, to the effect of “They used to hang people here. Not any more though.”
