This is Don Allen, author of The Black Ledger, which has been listed on Goodreads since its original publication way back in 2017. A lot has happened since then including an entertainment option, a theatrical script, and other attempts to move the project from book form to screen or something in between. Long story short - every attempt at something else has put my dream of recording a compelling audio book version of the story on hold. Until now!
After many months of tedious and quite exasperating trial and error, voice coaching and hundreds of hours rerecording characters to get it right, The Black Ledger has been published in audio book form on Audible and just became available last week.
This book of fiction is based on a true story that happened to me in the city of Chicago circa 1980. A time when the country was barely digesting the concept of civil rights for African Americans and racist attitudes were the norm.
Short Synopsis:
The city of Chicago contains some of the most dangerous neighborhoods in America. It matters very little if your skin is black, brown, yellow or white. Life is exceedingly cheap in the ghettos of Chicago. There are gangs in these places who will happily kill you just for target practice.
This is where Ron Pickles tries to make a living. Right out of high school he gets his girlfriend pregnant, and they get married. They live in an apartment right across the hall from Ron’s mom, who is a mean drunkard. She hates Ron’s wife and constantly starts trouble between them. I mean like every day. She is a despicable human being.
Ron’s employment prospects are dreadfully slim, but a friend of a friend has agreed to give Ron a leg up in getting into Chicago’s Electrical Union to serve his apprenticeship and then big money starts rolling in. The problem is that he needs some kind of job to survive until the Union calls.
He manages to get a job selling life insurance. He takes the job, but they don’t tell him his territory is in the heart of Chicago’s ghetto and pointedly in the infamous projects. He makes his rounds with a black salesman who helps Ron understand the ins and outs of working his Black Ledger.
Along the way he meets an array of colorful characters who teach him about life, love and loss. Then a gruesome murder throws Ron in the midst of a horrific crime scheme perpetrated by a few agents in the insurance company. A massive con designed to steal death benefits from their grieving clients.
They know Ron knows and are out to get him. Ron’s life just went from bad to worse.
I would feel privileged if some of you good folks would be interested in listening to the audio book version and providing an honest (Good, Bad or indifferent review of the recording) A quick message and I will provide you some promo codes just like the other fine authors in this group.
