A high-tension and ingenious thriller following five couples trapped on a storm-swept island as a killer stalks among them.
Lyla is in a bit of a rut. Her post-doctoral research has fizzled out, she’s pretty sure they won’t extend her contract, and things with her boyfriend, Nico, an aspiring actor, aren’t going great. When the opportunity arises for Nico to join the cast of a new reality TV show, The Perfect Couple, she decides to try out with him. A whirlwind audition process later, Lyla find herself whisked off to a tropical paradise with Nico, boating through the Indian Ocean towards Ever After Island, where the two of them will compete against four other couples—Bayer and Angel, Dan and Santana, Joel and Romi, and Conor and Zana—in order to win a cash prize.
But not long after they arrive on the deserted island, things start to go wrong. After the first challenge leaves everyone rattled and angry, an overnight storm takes matters from bad to worse. Cut off from the mainland by miles of ocean, deprived of their phones, and unable to contact the crew that brought them there, the group must band together for survival. As tensions run high and fresh water runs low, Lyla finds that this game show is all too real—and the stakes are life or death.
A fast-paced, spellbinding thriller rife with intrigue and characters that feel so true to life, this novel proves yet again that Ruth Ware is the queen of psychological suspense.
wow (view spoiler)[ what a crappy show! lol Like they said, no staff to help them. they aren't even monitoring her blood sugar!? Yikes!
it's wild, the days between that first mayday was 2/15 - the next day! Oh no! SO the storm must hit tonight Does that mean Nico was on the boat too?
Yeah, not a fan of Nico. He didn't seem to really see her or care about her. it seemed like he jumped into a relationship for the place to live and someone to cover the bills while he tried to get his career going. Love that he doesn't stand out in this group of pretty people
I think the last day they are on there with the mayday is 2/24. 9 days. here we go! (hide spoiler)]
OMG (view spoiler)[ there are so few left and now it's just the women and Conor that guy is so gross but Zana's diary logs glossing over and changing the narrative is just as gross. The only way I think the diary works is if the girls get away with killing Conor. THEN they can show it was all just accidents!
(view spoiler)[ ha! I loved it! I knew she was making that journal to support their story. I agree, it makes me sad that Baz just wanted to expose him but in his haste, he almost killed them all instead of being cautious and doing things right. and the girls made him a hero instead
but it doesn't matter. They made it out.
I also really liked that the author gave us that text from Nico in the end. it was such a touching moment, to know he wasn't raging about her on the boat when he died. (hide spoiler)]
