Col (bear_euphemism) | 24 comments Hello everyone,

I have some free time this summer so I'd like to go back to beta reading as a hobby. I have beta read for friends and for a couple strangers, and I've done some academic editing. I'm in UTC time zone.

I have degrees in medieval history and folklore, and I am doing a PhD in medieval literature, so I am very interested in historical fiction (or historical-esque), especially if it's prehistoric, set in early medieval Europe or the Viking Age, or has LGBTQ content. I'm also interested in reading basically anything else, except for scripts. Horror and romance are cool.

I read very, very fast (grad student brain) and I can be pretty direct.

Let me know if you're interested!

MINDLESSAMBITION. | 27 comments Hello! If you're interested at all in fantasy works, I have a prologue and a first chapter that I'm currently looking for feedback on, it's a little more than 3k words. Takes place in, as I mentioned before, a fantasy setting as well as a military one. It includes a fairly graphic scene and some crude language, so if you're uncomfortable with or just not interested in those I understand. Message me if you're interested. :)

Lyra | 1 comments Hey Col!

I have a sci-fi/fantasy novel around 87k words. Follows a cast of queer characters with Greek and Norse deities sprinkled into the lore of a now technologically advanced fantasy world (albeit in the cyberpunk vein of high tech, low life).

I'm looking to get general feedback, and more specialized feedback in the vein of "is it easy to follow?" and "Do you like the characters?" and etc.

You can email me at helikthonios@gmail.com for details and if you're interested!

Alyssa Wells | 5 comments Hello,

I have a completed YA paranormal romance (with urban fantasy undertones) novel that needs some eyes on it before being sent to an editor. It is approximately 80k words. If interested, I will send the prologue + first three chapters. Please reach out here or my email is writerawells@gmail.com. Thank you!

"Vampires aren’t real."

Tell that to Teddy. Despite her grandmother’s wild stories, she was never quite convinced vampires are actually real. Besides, she has bigger things to worry about, like deciding which college she’s going to attend. It sounds simple enough, but her long-term boyfriend already has their life planned out for them. Teddy just isn’t sure it’s the life for her. A fight between them causes Teddy to run off into the night. What she didn’t expect was to run into one of the creatures from her grandmother’s stories.

Romeo, a half-vampire, half-human hybrid, has been kept in hiding for his whole seventeen years of existence. Loneliness and curiosity get the best of him, and he sneaks out to get a taste of the world beyond the four walls of his home.

The two of them are from completely different worlds - Yet when they meet for the first time, they feel drawn to one another in a way they can't explain.

With Teddy's help, Romeo learns to embrace his "human" side. Together, they experience all the ups and downs of senior year. But as the school year draw to a close, feelings blossom between the two of them that are impossible to ignore."

Agneeshikha | 4 comments Are you still open to beta reading?
My novella (40k words approx) is a werewolf romance (slow-burn, with folklore references)
My folklore fiction is well researched so you would like it. Knowing your background, I really hope you read it :)

I am trying to avoid a cliché story in terms of characters! This book has a very strong-minded, career-oriented and independent female lead with a werewolf alpha who is not just strong but also a down-to-earth, funny, caring guy, basically a walking green flag! If you would be interested, please email me: agneeshikha.writes@gmail.com

David Cray | 42 comments Hi Col,
I'm looking for beta readers for my 130 K fantasy mystery manuscript. It's about a young man who always wanted a magic sword, but when he finally gets one, it doesn't go as he imagined. If interested, let me know either here on Goodreads or by email at davidcray1988@gmail.com. Thanks so much!

Col (bear_euphemism) | 24 comments Awright, I still have time!

New considerations:

- If it's longer than about 50k and I don't like it I probably won't read to the end
- I am trying to average about 2000 words of commentary for each piece

message me here or send email to colinbeowulf@gmail.com and I'll take a look

message 16: by Murray (new)

Murray Weber | 32 comments Hey Col

I thought I would throw my hat into the ring as well. This is a follow-up story to the book Songs in the Key of Jim E. This story continues with Jimmy's grown-up daughter. I have prepared some beta reader questions at the start to narrow your commentary. I am particularly interested if there are holes a person would experience by not having read the original book.

The blurb would consist of the following
At nineteen, Dylan Janis Martin (DJ) is tall, talented, and tenacious, living by her creed: "Eyes on the Prize." A rebellious soul, DJ is determined to step out of her successful father's shadow and become a major label recording artist. Her drive to prove herself leads her down a precarious road where ambition often clouds her judgment. As she relentlessly pursues success, DJ makes questionable choices that strain her relationships with those she loves most: her father, boyfriend, and bandmates.
Navigating life’s challenges, DJ is forced to confront her deepest fears and desires. Along the way, she learns that true success isn't about external validation but understanding and embracing her authentic self. The journey to self-discovery and genuine achievement is fraught with uncertainty, but it is through these trials that DJ discovers the true meaning of success.
Set in the early 2000s. "Songs in the Key of DJ" is a compelling and heartfelt story about dreams, identity, and the complex dynamics of family and love. It explores the exhilarating highs and devastating lows of striving for greatness while remaining true to oneself. DJ's story is an inspiring reminder that the path to success is not always straightforward, but it is always worth taking.

60,000 words with many musical references
Thank you for your time to review.

Col (bear_euphemism) | 24 comments Hello - I continue to have free time, so I want to read your books.

About me: Doctoral student in medieval literature, have degrees in folklore and medieval studies, have done beta reading on and off for friends and enemies about five years, have done academic editing. I was averaging about 2000 words of feedback in my last couple rounds.

Again, I am particularly interested in LGBTQ stuff and historical fiction, especially if it's set in early medieval Europe or the Viking Age. I enjoy horror. I like romance. I have no problem with gore or violence or difficult themes. I am not all that excited about YA but maybe you can make it work.

What I'm looking for: Narrative fiction, no scripts

Rules: I'm going to be honest. I will comment on your technical skills. I will recommend you literature to read as a comparison to your own. If it's over 50k and I don't like it, I won't finish it and I will explain to you in detail as to why - if it's shorter than that I'll probably give it a shot front to back.

Right now (evening of 7/24) I have two longhaul international flights coming up in the next three days. I will have absolutely nothing to do except read. If you are interested in making my flights less boring, email me colinbeowulf@gmail.com.

Murray Weber | 32 comments Just a follow-up to a previous note on July 8. I have a 65,000 word story that I am looking to critique. As a sequel to a previously published novel, I need to determine if there are issues that a new reader would not understand, along with the normal critique of the storyline, characters etc.
It is a romance story but heavily influenced by music. Various conflicts exist between the main character DJ and her father, boyfriend and bandmates.
The original novel is found here https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CVVZRHRX

Hi Col. I have an 80k historical fiction mystery thriller set in the 1960s I would appreciate your feedback on. The protagonist, Rocco Mancuso, is a disfigured Ivy League educated attorney with a broken marriage and a jerk for a boss. He works for the US Atomic Energy Commission catching spies trying to steal nuclear weapons materials and secrets, a lonely and highly dangerous occupation. This is book two in a series with book one in editing and book three half done. It is called MANCUSO: Termination Wind. If interested, please contact me at w.michael.hewitt@gmail.com. Erwan Atcheson | 26 comments Hi Col,

I've written a 50,000 word novella called 'The Happy Hunting Ground of All Minds', set in contemporary Northern Ireland. Sometimes dark, often farcical comedy with horror themes. There's some violence. Would you be interested in reading it?

Kind regards,
Erwan

William Shier | 24 comments Hi Col,

If you have any more spots open to look at my novel that would be amazing. It is a literary speculative fiction novel (with a touch of horror and some folklore elements) called THE BRIDGE.

Below is an elevator pitch, blurb, and some comp titles to give you an idea.

The Bridge, a monumental structure, stretches the breadth of The Atlantic Ocean and THE MAN is crossing it on foot to reach his love.

--

A story of determination, hope, fear, war, and love.

The Bridge stretches the breadth of The Atlantic. At one end, THE MAN. At the other, his Love.

Considered a war hero for his actions as a conscript, The Man was living quietly in his village wanting to forget his struggles, until one day he accesses a chat-room on what remains of the near-future internet. There he meets someone who gives new purpose to his life, but they live on the other side of the world. Torn between tending to his dying hometown and starting a new life, The Man decides to journey across The Bridge and embrace the perils that come with it.

The Bridge poses many unanswered questions and presents many impossible things. Those living upon the monstrous structure would sooner let The Man die than help him for free and The Pilgrims travel counter to his heading. The Man must reckon with who he is, what he has done, and what he can still do. We learn of his past and see what he will do to secure his future.

How far would you go for your Love?

---

Some of the literary voice and architectural magicalism of Piranesi (Susanna Clarke) with the political, near-future bite of The Wall (John Lanchester). Sometimes as dark, haunting, and biblical as The Road (Cormac McCarthy).

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

- Will

Chelsie | 57 comments Hi Col! If you're interested I would love for you to read my YA fantasy novel (99k words in length), Four Queens' Fates! Here's the blurb:

Every generation in the royal family of the Queendom of Dirington, four sisters are born. And every generation, when the youngest sister turns thirteen, the girls are given three years to kill one another. This generation seems to be cursed. Each sister has different beliefs and ulterior motives, but they share a couple things in common: they all have softer hearts than a queen should, they share passion and fury, and rebellion rises in their hearts.
Firanna is the oldest and strongest sister, and she bears the power of the Fire Element. She struggles to keep a strong face in front of events that threaten to make her mask slip. She seems heartless and cruel on the outside, but inside she’s fighting to keep herself together. Watene is the next eldest and the weakest sister, with the power of the Water Element. She’s resigned herself to death, since her body is weak and she’s dying anyway. But when a certain boy enters her life she begins to think maybe she holds more power than she thought. The next sister is Ealinna, the Earth Elemental. She is the strongest and bravest, but while she isn’t against killing, a bond has begun to grow between her and her sisters. The youngest sister, Airabella, is the Air Elemental. Her unconditional love for all her sisters makes her a prime target and shows she’s unfit to be queen.
When the sisters meet, they can’t find it within themselves to kill one another. As they delve deeper into the queendom’s history, they begin to realize that it’s not their sisters they should hate, but society. Between romance, trickery, and the fight to survive, the four sisters weave an intensely emotional plot. And some day, at least one of them will take the crown. But who will it be?

There is an LGBTQ+ romance, however it isn't your usual genre, so I was wondering if you'd be interested?

Ms. C | 23 comments Hi there,

My name is Mary and I have a manuscript for a novel called "Mullo". I am looking for beta readers to read and critique it, and I saw your advertisement in a Goodreads "Beta Reader Group". I would describe "Mullo" as historical fiction, horror, romance, and LGBT. It goes back and forth between a story that takes place in the past and one that takes place in the present. Here is a blurb I wrote for it:

"THEN
In 19th century Romania, death is always just around the corner. Zorya, a Roma healer woman, knows this well. But when a stranger unexpectedly calls on her expertise, she, her husband, and her children, find themselves in a place they were once forbidden from entering. But even as their life becomes more stable and prosperous, it may only take one tragedy for things to fall apart."

"NOW
Nick Alicea isn’t having a bad day. He’s having a bad life. Stuck in a dead-end job, drowning in debt, and haunted by a tragedy from his past, he's struggling. So, when a chance encounter leads to a friendship with Mirza Durvari, a quiet doctor with a mysterious illness, Nick’s life starts to seem a little less bleak. But even as their relationship becomes more intimate, Nick is forced to ask himself: Who is Mirza Durvari"

The entire manuscript is 125,000 words. Let me know if you are interested in beta reading.

Looking forward to hearing from you..

~Mary
