Here's my rules. Like I said, there's always exceptions.
Rule 1: Always have your book professionally copy and content edited.
Rule 2: Have your cover designed by a professional and ensure that they are responsive to your ideas.
Rule 3: Research all your options. Do not go into the field of publishing blindly. Educate yourself. You can just upload a book on Amazon. People do. You shouldn't. Learn as much as you can first.
Rule 4: Use beta readers. This is important because a copy and content editor will find many things, but beta readers can really give you a feel for what's working and what isn't.
Read 5: Never pay for reviews.
There's way more rules. I'll post them as they pop into my brain. You all please feel free to as well.
