Steamwing | 38 comments I finished a book about a month ago, which was the first book in a series. I didn't like it (I rated it 2⭐️), and I was wondering if I should read the next books and see if their better.

Diana Jaques | 134 comments That's up to you. Sometimes the first book isn't all that but it can get seemingly better throughout the rest of the series. I would give it a go, even if you read half of it and decided it definitely isn't for you.
Happy reading :)

Casey | 4 comments The first book is most series is usually the best or worst of the series lol. So i’d say definitely give the next one a try! :)

Lisa Mahady | 60 comments You will never have time to read all the books you want to read - Life is too short for bad books. Move on to something else!

Dani Rodriguez 🌷 | 3 comments I would! I’ve found that a lot of the first book in the series are usually shitty, like acotar

LilMisGrayBrisk | 551 comments The series that comes to mind for me is Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews. I thought the first book was just ok and didn’t like the second, so I had planned to stop. I was encouraged to read the third book and I was so glad I listened, as it’s one of my favorites now. So, I’ll generally give the second book a chance if the first one was just ok or maybe I didn’t like as much. It also depends on my level of investment in the characters and/or the story.

Gypsy (ignited_red_queen) | 25 comments I think it depends on how bad you didn't like the first book. For instance ACOTAR, The first book was eh for me but I enjoyed the rest of the series. Another one is Crave, I wasn't a huge fan of the first book but I loved the rest of the series.

message 8: by Anthony (new)

Anthony Brooks (asbrooks88) I am for sure going to continue on, I started book 1 of 2 series and opted for the one I am currently loving!

becs | 178 comments I wouldn't force yourself to like something that you aren't connecting with - that's like a book lovers personal torture . personally, if i don't like a book, then I don't force myself to read the next book in the series, but I typically will finish that one book to see what I feel by the end, and be able to say that I know I don't like it.

sarah | 288 comments I read THE GIVER series and the first book was just ok but I wasn’t thrilled about the rest of the set. I decided I bought the whole set off Amazon with my two friends so I figured just read em and get it done. The GIVER is a very good read as a whole, I really enjoyed it. I say if you already bought the set then read it now if you haven’t then I think yes time is precious so read what you really want.

Shay | 30 comments I have continued series after not really liking the first book, and ended up loving the rest of the books! but it all just depends on if u are willing to keep going even though there is potential u won't like the rest of the series.

M Samuell (pages_and_potions) | 1 comments That depends on why you're reading the series in the first place, honestly.

I know I am never going to get through my TBR so I have a 50 page rule. If the first 50 pages are at least interesting I'll give it up to 100 pages to convince me if I care how it ends. (So roughly the first third of a book. Half if it's an ARC in order to be fair to the author/publisher.)

The only time I will revisit a series that didn't grab my attention is if a: it was personally recommended by someone I know has similar taste, or b: I want to like the series but maybe wasn't in the right mood/mind frame.

Case and point: ACOTAR. Everyone says to get past the first one and it gets better, but I really did not like the first and don't want to invest time that could be better spent elsewhere. (Even Throne of Glass was my cup of tea, doesn't mean Maas and I can't be friends.) Just like I have had to learn to accept that Harry Potter isn't for everyone. (Even though it's hard to wrap my head around.)

There is nothing wrong with having exacting preferences, it just means you know what works for you and you don't want to waste time 'tinder book dating' around.

Lynn | 130 comments There’s a trend in modern romantasy series to be abusive toward the female main characters, and there must be an increase in people who enjoy S & M. Anyway, I don’t really enjoy that, but I have found that will sometimes be heavy in a first book, and lean more toward romance in later books. (Which still bugs me, but still… the books get better.)

Melissa Fox | 1 comments I don't think it's worth to read another book if you don't like first series book

message 15: by Jason (new)

Jason Boje | 12 comments nah, what's the point. like others have said, if you don't like the first, why bother with the others when there's plenty of other book series that you will enjoy?

message 16: by Amira (new)

Amira | 2 comments yesss totally!!! sometimes, sadly the first book isn't the best, but the next are

Sim1 (sim1saunders) | 47 comments this happened to me for Harry Potter as a kid. didn't care for the Sorcerers stone but loved Chamber of Secrets.

Kristina Kamaeva | 76 comments If I don't like a book I feel miserable and give up on it pretty soon.
I struggled through ACOTAR, but so many people say that second book is better, so may be I'll give it a try :)

Bruna Galamba | 45 comments It depends... Why are you reading the book of the series in the first place? What drew you to it?

A book has a 100 pages to conquer me. And even still I won't leave it halfway. I will power through. But I, most likely, won't read the rest of the series. If I do, in those rare cases, someone has to really convince me to read the rest of the series, but it may take a while. I have been surprised by a few.
Example: not every Harry Potter book is great. I took me a while to read Philosopher's Stone and Order of the Phoenix. But the rest of the series is great. Every single one of the Song of Ice and Fire is a great story, but a terrible read. I do power through, even though I don't really enjoy the writting.

And, even worse case scenario, is the first book being great and the others suck.
Example: Haunting Adeline is great. Hunting Adeline is terrible.

And it may happen lots of people saying the first book is not great and you love it. For example, lots of people talk badly about ACOTAR. I loved it! Let's see how the others are.

And it may happen that all the books are great. I loved every single one of the Folk of the Air.

Case is: reading a series is a surprise box. You never know what you will get, how you'll feel. You may have a great start and a terrible ending. You may get a terrible start and a great ending. Or just an "eh" start to end... Truth is, you will only know if you read all of them.

I think this is the issue: It may be that it's not the right time for you to be reading the series. I know there are lots of series that, had I read them now for the first time, I wouldn't like them (like the Fifty Shades trilogy) and I know that if I had read them before I wouldn't have liked them then (like the Lord of the Rings).

message 21: by Stacey Brown (new)

Stacey Brown | 25 comments I usually don’t continue with a series if I didn’t like the first book…

message 22: by Mike (new)

Mike | 107 comments It depends. Did the book have any redeeming features. Several years ago, I started a series of thrillers by Paul Doiron set in Maine. I hated the main character but enjoyed the book. As read more, I eventually grew to like the character.

message 23: by whatbooknext (new)

whatbooknext (wwwwhatbooknextcom) | 18 comments No. There are so many great books out there. We are all different, and it really doesn't matter if you don't like the books others are raving about. Life's too short to read books you're not enjoying.

message 24: by ♤Lizzy♤ (new)

♤Lizzy♤ (Inactive) | 200 comments I'd say give it a try. if you don't like the first book try like a Kindle sample of the next
for instance, The Inheritance Games, it was good but got so much better, then the third one sucked so. Maybe just try.

message 25: by Leeann (new)

Leeann (lylack) | 35 comments Normally I will say you should not finish the series but I guess it depend on the series. I would say if you end up not liking the second book then don't finish the series. Or if you did like most if the second book then you should finish the series.

message 26: by Liv (new)

Liv | 7 comments I recommend searching up a detailed summary to see if it matches what I lowkey want to explore to happen. I read a book I really did not like, but I ended up searching for the sequel and read it. it was still bad so that's why i have begun to research the 2nd books a little more. to see what people have to say. it can help put you at ease

message 27: by Judith Speed (new)

Judith Speed | 208 comments Personally, I wouldn’t. I abandoned Annihilation and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy after the first ones because I couldn’t connect to either of them.
Reading is to be enjoyed, not endured.

message 28: by sarah (new)

sarah | 288 comments Yes. I read The Giver and thought yea this book is ok but then I read the second and third books and then I thought WOW that was really good. It all comes together in the next books. Happy reading

message 29: by Julie (new)

Julie Failla Earhart (juliefaillaearhart) | 15 comments Nope!

Bawy{•_•} (bawy_) | 12 comments IF you truly hated the first book and there wasn't anything you liked about it then probably don't continue with the series. But if it was a 50/50 read or if you liked a character or some aspects of the book then maybe you should give the second book a try ^_^ .

message 31: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn (evelyntheshadowsinger) | 39 comments It depends on the series. If it's a series that follows the same protagonist and the reason why you didn't like the first book was the characters, I'd pass on the rest of the series.

If it was a problem with the plot, then try reading a brief summary of the book without spoilers to see if it intrigues you, if it does I'd give the series another chance.

Lastly, if it's an interconnected standalone series with changing main characters, then I'd personally say give the next one a chance. For example, I personally didn't really like Twisted Love by Ana Huang, but I continued the series and Twisted Games and Twisted Lies ended up being some of my all-time favorite books

message 32: by Anik (new)

Anik Sales (knitnet) | 5 comments I heard of instances of when the second book is better than the first, but I personally would not waste my time.

nx74defiant | 1 comments If I am kind of meh, I may look at the reviews of the following books to see if it looks like it might be getting better.

message 34: by Rainbow Unicorn (new)

Rainbow Unicorn (brenda-leemagner) Personal preference, but I think each author has a bad book in them, and I always say "If you read a book by an author and dislike it, try a second one by them before totally ruling them out, as each author has a bad book in their repertoire and you might just have picked up that one bad book."

If you are familiar with the author and like their other works give it another chance. If the second book isn't a 4 or 5 then move on.

Ayansh Saxena | 18 comments you could try the second volume of it only the second, then if u like u can

message 37: by Jenny Baker (new)

Jenny Baker (jennyrbaker) It really depends on why you didn't like the first book. If you're a mood reader, then maybe you just read the first book at the wrong time. If the series still interests you, I'd try the second book and see how it goes. If you have a similar experience as you did with the first, then move on.

message 38: by Kate (new)

Kate G | 5 comments I'd at least give the second book in a series a try, but I do agree with others that it depends on what you found was wrong with the book or didn't enjoy about it. Sometimes you'll enjoy it but I would either take it out from the library just in case I still don't like it. As yeah sometimes it gets better sometimes it doesn't.

message 39: by maja (new)

maja | 151 comments maybe you read like the first few pages/chapter of the second book and then depending if you liked those chose to continue the series or not to

message 40: by Pluto (new)

Pluto | 45 comments It really depends.

I've given books second chances but most of the time if I don't like book 1 I won't read book 2.
(Im looking at you Caraval)

But sometimes, a not great book leaves me on an annoying cliff hanger and I can't get past it. (Im looking at you Once Upon a Broken Heart)

So its kind of touch and go. I just read a book called #murdertrending it has I think 2 more books in the series. I won't touch them.
