June's read of Because of the Lockwoods by Dorothy Whipple.

This will be a bit sad for me, as it is the last novel I have by her. Having enjoyed her short stories in last months collection so much, I am looking forward to more of those.

I started this one this afternoon. As always, she has immediately drawn me into the story. I love Thea, she is so protective of her family and fiercely determined to get what she wants. The Lockwoods are pretty awful; so superior, and yet they come across as having no class, especially after Mr Lockwood has stolen that paddock, (though he has probably managed to convince himself that that is not what happened). Mrs Hunter is always so pathetically grateful, I wish she would stand up for the family more - it seems the children are more grown up, or at least capable, than she is.

Antoinette | 104 comments I started this book 2 days ago and can’t bear to put it down. I can’t stand the Lockwood’s, especially Mr Lockwood. He steals from them and had the temerity to treat Mrs Hunter with such disdain. Thea will be the force in this family.
I have to say I really like Oliver. Since I recently finished Mary Barton, I can say that Oliver reminds me of Jem. In love with Thea, reliable, hard working.

Oliver is a great character, dogged in his devotion. The Lockwoods are still awful, though Claire seems the best of the bunch. Mrs Lockwood has obviously taught the twins that they are better than anyone ekse, (apart from Angela), the Apple hasn't fallen far from the tree there. I did enjoy the description of their return from France - having been fitted out in Paris.
