Kristie | 2212 comments Hi all,
I hadn't revisited my library's OneClickDigital selection in a long time. Turns out I should have...there are a bunch of books I've purchased in the past year or so that I could have gotten free.

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone has ever listened to OneClickDigital books on their device through the Smart AudioBook app. I'd rather not use OCD's app (can't adjust the playback speed). I tried transferring a book over to my phone, but couldn't get it to go. I seem to be having some other issues with my phone tonight, so I'm trying to figure out what specific issue(s) I'm having. Thanks!

Kristie | 2212 comments I think I figured it out. It isn't pretty, but it plays. I think it recognizes the file from the app, and it doesn't bring over the title or cover art. Also, unlike Overdrive books, I'm pretty sure it's going to remove itself from my phone at checkout time, as I think it's getting the file from the app. All better than paying for books, though. If anyone knows any secrets to making this work better with OCD books, I'm all ears!

Kelly | 295 comments You can play Overdrive books through the Smart Audiobook app?

message 4: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (haveah) | 106 comments Yes. But only the MP3 files. Just point the Smart Audiobook app to the folder that holds your Overdrive audiobooks. OR move the audiobooks once downloaded to the folder your smart audiobook player sees. Both apps should tell you what folder they point to in Settings.

Kristie | 2212 comments Now I figured out how to rename the OCD folder to be the book name, so that makes it seem much more viable. Yay!!!

And yes, you can listen to Overdrive books on Smart AudioBook, as Natalie said. I really prefer that app over the library's version. AND if you download the book to the media manager on your computer, then manually move the files to your device via USB, they won't get deleted when your library loan expires or gets returned. I obviously would advocate for it to be deleted once you've listened, but it gives you a little more flexibility for when you want to listen.

Yeah. It's probably because Smart Audiobook Player is coded as a "system app" for Android. This way if you have a task killer installed- it ignores SAP.

Apple has a problem with non-Apple-generated system apps.

I'm sorry to resurrect this ancient thread, but I am just so frustrated with oneclickdigital right now. I am trying to get it into a format where I can adjust the playback speed. I installed the OCD download manager for Mac and transferred to my iPhone only to find that the files are classified as music files and therefore can't be sped up either. When I tried to edit the tracks to audiobook files they won't work at all and return an error when I try to play them.

I'm wondering if you are still able to use the smart audiobook player to listen to OCD files, and if so, how you accomplished this. Not being able to speed up is basically a deal breaker for me using OCD and Overdrive. So annoying.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) One Click Digital uses MP3 files if they're not DRM protected. That's the same file type as music files. My Sansa Clips can identify the difference based on the folder they're in. If you're using Apple stuff, I guess that means making iTunes recognize the difference. I'm not sure if you can do that by just file type or by folder, but here is one solution.
https://discussions.apple.com/message...

If that doesn't work for you, try googling for iTunes & audiobook. I know my daughter was happy when hers died & she switched to an Android. She was always having issues with iTunes & her audiobooks.

Thanks so much, Jim! While it didn't exactly fix my issue, it did put me on the right track. Even after I changed the type to audiobook in both the "details" and the "options" tab, I still couldn't get the audio files to play in the Music app. A little more searching and I realized that apple has moved audiobooks to iBooks. Lo and behold, it was in iBooks, could be played, AND has playback speed options up to 2x. HOORAY!!!!

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Super! I'm glad you managed to figure it out.

Bj | 2 comments Hi everyone, I'm having the same frustrations with One Click Digital as I usually listen to my audiobooks in a faster speed. I gather that the Smart Audiobook App only works on androids as I can't find in the Apple App Store. Does anyone know of an Apple App that allows you to play the protected One Click Digital audiobooks and which you can use to speed up the playback time?

message 13: by Thedadeba (new)

Thedadeba | 5 comments Hi all, I listen with a playback speed 1.8 or 1.6 (non-US accents) and to date have limited my library-book listening to Overdrive ABs since OCD Support told me in 2015 that their app had no variable speed ability. Since my library has some books available only in OCD format, I checked to see if they've since added this enhancement and it appears that they have. Yippeee!
I haven't tried it out but wanted to share the url to the userguide with fellow sufferers. Strangely I found it on a couple of public library sites (not on the OCD site). One is: http://budalibrary.org/DocumentCenter....
I also want to have bookmark functionality and it's unclear whether this is offered for downloaded ABs (vs. listening directly from the OCD app on the library's site). If not, I'll just have to listen to those AB's via wi-fi -- but still from my android phone or tablet. Not a big deal.
Note for non-Apple users: the guide has a heading that ends with "Apple only" but I believe it applies ONLY to the Download ALL section (not to all subsequent sections).
Happy listening-- ;-p

Bj | 2 comments Hi Thedadeba, thank you for your response. I'm not home, so I can't confirm for sure but I think that manual is old. Note it has a 2013 date reference on the cover. I believe this is how it worked when you could download protected files to your computer. Now that Microsoft doesn't allow for their encryption, you can no longer download protected files to your computer. I tried to download a file today and didn't see any option for varying the speed either on my computer or my mobile app: (

Rosalyn (rozrt) | 2 comments Hi just wondering if anyone can help. I have an old sansa clip mp3. I listen to audio books on it. Not that regularly I now find that many of the audiobooks from the library will not transfer and my laptop tells me that microsoft will not allow it. Is there any way round this as if I download to a smartphone they disappear long before I finish them.

Are those books listed as "Protected" on OCD? If so, that's why. Unprotected books are in mp3. Proteced uses some kind of DRM. Not sure what it is currently, but I believe MS quit supporting the old .wma Play For Sure DRM quite awhile back. That's what the older Sansa's used.

I normally just download mp3 books to my phone then copy the book folder into my general audiobooks folder, rename, and give them a cover (because OCD's android app is awful and I'd rather play them with something else). However, you can't do that with protected books, so I assume that's the same issue you're facing.

Rosalyn (rozrt) | 2 comments Many thanks for the help I am just going to have to keep an eye out for the non protected ones or listen more often.
Happy new year.

Lauren (laurenjberman) Hi,
I'm new to the group and just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has posted in this thread. It has been so useful in solving my issues with the OneClickDigital app.

I prefer listening using the Multi Audiobook Player on my iPod because I can speed up in increments of .10 and it also compensates for changes in pitch.

The OCD app is truly awful, but now thanks to you all I used the download manager to transfer directly to my ipod and bypassed the app altogether :0)

Both the Hoopla app and the OCD app are awful on Android. Hoopla not quite as bad as OCD. I much prefer to wait for a book in queue if I have to on Overdrive than use either of the other if the books are protected.

I've gone so far when books are in protected format on OCD to capture books played through a browser into an audio recording app for OCD books just to avoid the awful app on my phone. It's always nice to be able to use the books with an app of preference.

Lauren (laurenjberman) Andy wrote: "Hoopla not quite as bad as OCD. ."

Unfortunately, Hoopla doesn't have a download manager to transfer the book from the computer to the MP3 player (at least not that I've found), so I'm willing to put up with it out of necessity.

Right. But if you had to live in one services app or the other's, Hoopla's better. Not saying much.

Also, some of the OCD audibooks are "protected" and can't be moved like unprotected, non-DRM MP3's. If you decide you want one of those books in another player, then you go down a rabbit hole of getting that audio into another file in other ways that are much more work.

Agreed. Hoopla is at least usable (once I figured out how to download the book so I could listen offline that is, lol!)

Thanks for the info on the protected ones. I'll keep that in mind if I come across one.

message 24: by Meg (new)

Meg | 3 comments I had a recent insight about OCD. The search is so bad in the Android app, but slightly less crappy in a web browser. So I hunt for and check out books in the browser and then switch to the app to download them.

The player still sucks, but I don't change speeds much or like any other players well enough to switch, so I'm living with it.

I suspect the most effective ways to put pressure on OCD and Hoopla are complaints to libraries about how awful they are and public reviews in the app stores.

message 25: by Roz (new)

Roz Grimes | 14 comments Size matters, and I need an MP3 player that I can use with OneClickDigital to download library check-outs. I don't mind buying a new device, but I need a small one. My phone works fine, but too big. I don't have an ipad, but I think it's too big. In olden days, I used the Creative Zen V Plus (tiny) and although it was a bit complicated, you could download OCD onto it. I also want something with bookmarking. To be able to vary the speed would be optimal! I would LOVE to hear if any of you have been able to find a small device to use with OCD. Thanks!!
