Sam | 7 comments Requesting the Standard Ebooks edition of Collected Ghost Stories, by M.R. James [goodreads book page here]

Title: Collected Ghost Stories

Author(s) name(s): M.R. James

ISBN (or ASIN): nil.

Publisher: Standard Ebooks

Publication date: 2020

Format: ebook

Page count: 452

Description: Montague Rhodes James was a respected scholar of medieval manuscripts and early biblical history, but he is best remembered today as a writer of ghost stories. His work has been much esteemed by later writers of horror, from H. P. Lovecraft to Steven King.

The stereotypical Jamesian ghost story involves a scholar or gentleman in a European village who, through his own curiosity, greed, or simple bad luck, has a horrifying supernatural encounter. For example, in “ ‘Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad,’ ” a professor finds himself haunted by a mysterious figure after blowing a whistle found in the ruins of a Templar church, and in “Count Magnus,” a writer’s interest in a mysterious and cruel figure leads to horrific consequences. Other stories have the scholar as an antagonist, like “Lost Hearts” and “Casting the Runes,” where study of supernatural rites gives way to practice. James’ stories find their horror in their atmosphere and mood, and strike a balance in their supernatural elements, being neither overly descriptive nor overly vague.

This collection includes all the stories from his collections Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, More Ghost Stories, A Thin Ghost and Others, and A Warning to the Curious and Other Ghost Stories.

David Raz (davidraz) | 12754 comments The work you linked, Ghost Stories Wordsworth edition, includes 30 stories. The one you want added has 26. From what I can tell, the following four stories are missing: "Wailing Well", "There Was a Man Dwelt by a Churchyard", "Rats", and "After Dark in the Playing Fields".

The Oxford edition includes 33 stories, adding "The Experiment", "The Malice of Inanimate Objects", and "A Vignette". Incidentally, I found those seven stories in Ghost Stories, which was erroneously combined. There is also a 22 Stories edition.

At this point, I realized I’ve spent the better part of a morning sorting out this book and gave up. If you can find another edition with these 26 stories, I can combine them. Otherwise, it will ride solo: Short Fiction.

Sam | 7 comments Thanks! I'm really sorry about this, it's been months since the request and I basically forgot about it, but I just did a search and it seems someone had already added it before my request: Here - but the page count isn't right (651). You may want to combine that with your page? And no, I can't find another edition either. Again, sorry that it took up your time. In the future, I'll do a more thorough search before making a request.

David Raz (davidraz) | 12754 comments My bad for not noticing that.
I deleted the redundant edition and combined with the paperback.
