Team Ultimate Bookopoly *HOW TO PLAY*
Have Questions? Ask here!
But PLEASE, try to read through the rules and previously asked questions before asking!
COMMON QUESTION!
Does each team member have to complete a task to buy a property?
NO! You will complete tasks as a TEAM! Only ONE BOOK PER TEAM is required for any task. Every person on the team does not have to read a book for a property!

It has, although this is an updated version! Feel free to ask any questions here though!
It will also help to see the game board spreadsheet which will be added soon!

This sounds really fun!
My question is -- will there be a "required" frequency of books read? Say, for example, one book per week? Or is it more open, like read what you can for the task and move along the board at your leisure?
I guess I'm asking if there are going to be a mix of "casual" and "cutthroat competitors" levels?

Looks like my question is sort of answered in the Sign Ups post, but I'll leave it here in case anyone else has a similar query!

There is no reading requirement, only a requirement to check in with your team once a week, even if you haven't read anything.
As it is a team challenge, there will be a mix of readers and reading speeds, and you have no time requirement to complete a turn, other than what is considered reasonable, meaning your team can't take a month to complete a turn. In past games, this has never been a problem, as your team will build up a read book stash fairly quickly and will be able to pull books that have been read already to fulfill reading and purchasing requirements. The first week of the game is the slowest, but it picks up fairly quickly!
For example, if you needed a book with an orange cover to buy a property, you can use any book that anyone on your team read since the beginning of the game. There would be no need to read one during your teams turn unless you had no usable book.

Just looked at the spreadsheet and tasks -- this is amazing! Great job with those graphics and the tasks are a great variety of ease and creativity.

It may help to look at the game board (the link is at the beginning of this thread) and the property quick reference thread here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
You can look through the possible tasks for each property, as well as other money making tasks, like the stock market or the library!

This is up to the team as a whole. Most of the time, since you will be coming up on properties, etc at random, it's best if you try to fit what books you read into multiple tasks, so that they can be pulled as you land on something.
Does that make sense?

Got it now. Last questions for now. When it says for example yellow cab companies. Does the team only need to read for one of those prompts and do we have to wait until other teams play? Or do we go at our pace?
You can read at whatever pace and for whatever prompts you'd like, personally or as a team. You just can't use a book for a prompt until you actually need it, like landing on that space and purchasing.

Thank you

You may purchase immediately! :)

My question is regarding the bonus for participating in the Formal Buddy reads. Does the team earn the bonus on the books only once? Or does the team earn the bonus for the books for each member that reads and participates in the discussions?

Each time the book is read and then used in the challenge.
Each time the book is read and then used in the challenge.

Yes. Your team should be reading books while you wait on your turn to roll, so that you will have a cache of books started.

Thanks

For audiobooks, use the default edition.

Melanie, the answer to this can be found in your team thread in message 1! There is a reading start date.
📅 June 30th: Books may be started on this date, but cannot be finished until after midnight (EST) on July 1st!
Prinzess, yes! I always forget something!

Thanks! I checked the how to play thread but didn't think to check the team thread.
Question about turn-taking -- after we figure out what space we are going to land on and how we intend to handle that space, do we have to actually use a completed book before the turn can continue to the next team?
Or are we able to claim the space and just call it done once the book is finished?
Example: We land on a space that we know someone will have a book for but they aren't yet finished reading the book. Can we say we intend to buy property/read for the space (depending what the space is), and then the dice rolling can proceed to the next team in line?
And then once the book is finished, we then add our completed post to the turn-taking thread?
Or are teams stuck in a holding pattern until the team who currently "has the dice" completes reading their book and finishes the task?

Books need to be completed before your turn concludes, but I will allow some leeway the first week of play while books are being added.
I'm allowing a full 24hr hour period for the team whose turn it is to complete their turn. If the book needed hasn't been completed by the end of that 24hr period, the next team may roll.
That being said, the book required for purchasing must be completed before your next turn pops up, or that space will be forfeited.
This is ONLY for week one. Once week 2 begins, teams should have some books banked and each team should attempt to complete their turn in the allotted 24 hr period. If that can't be accomplished, see me for some additional steps.

Ashley, for the stocks, Profit or Loss calculated between $0.10-$0.50 per page.
Can you tell us what determines the amount? Will you make a roll or something like that?

How to Play:
Teams will take turns "rolling the dice" to move around the board.
Game Board: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
Turn Timing Rule:
🔸Requesting a Roll: Once a team completes their turn, the next team has 6 hours to request a roll. If the turn is completed between 8pm and 8am (in their timezone), the 6-hour timer begins at 8am.
🔸Starting the Turn: After a roll is given, the team has 6 hours to begin their turn. If the roll is given between 8pm and 8am (in their timezone), the 6-hour timer starts at 8am.
🔸Completing the Turn: Once a team begins their turn, they have 24 hours to complete it.
Note: These are deadlines, not requirements. You are free to complete your actions as quickly as you like, provided they stay within the outside time limits.
Book Rules
Standard Book Rules apply, plus...
🔸Rereads DO count for this challenge BUT must have been read more than 6 months ago.
🔸One book per prompt/task.
🔸You MUST add your read books to your Goodreads "Read" Shelf.
Task Rules
You must be able to justify how your book fits the prompt. Creativity is encouraged, but please hold to the task/prompt. Captains and Co-Captains are the first line for approving your book, if there is disagreement, they will follow-up with a mod!
🔹Cover Color must be more than 50% (https://labs.tineye.com/color/)
🔹List page number, percentage, or chapter for a word in text
🔹Cover Items should be linked, shown or mentioned in your post/spreadsheet
🔹Short explanation for other tasks for proof of task completion
Book Log
Players on each team should log EVERY book they read on their Team Tracking Sheet. These books will be used to buy properties and stocks, pay taxes and rent, fulfill other space requirements, and collect a salary. Once a book is used for something in the game, it cannot be used again. The Captains/Co-Captains will check the box on the Book Log to show this.
Money
🔸Teams start with $1,500.
🔸Collect a "salary" by depositing up to 10 banked books. Your team will deposit the chosen books once your team passes a PURPLE SPACE. There is a 10-book maximum per deposit. Once deposited, they cannot be used in the game again.
**Profits and Losses are calculated automatically on the Game Board Sheet!
🔸Books used for Salary: $0.10 per page
🔸Books used for Library: Deposit or Fine calculated at $0.05 per page
🔸Books used for Chance/CC/Ballot Box: Deposit or Debit calculated at $0.30 per page
🔸Books used for Stocks: Profit or Loss calculated between $0.10-$0.50 per page; each week a random Stock will be boosted and will be worth double the profit or loss!
FORMAL BUDDY READ BONUS: If you read and participate in one of HOB's Formal Buddy Reads and/or the Formal Series Buddy Read discussions, your page points will boost an additional $0.05 per page.
(To Claim this Bonus, please notify your Captain and they will have a mod confirm and modify the spreadsheet)
🔸July Books: The Amish Wife, A Fever in the Heartland, Gideon the Ninth
🔸August Books: The Bee Sting, West With Giraffes, Harrow the Ninth
🔸September Books: Ninth House, The Serpent and the Wings of Night, Nona the Ninth
Buying/Selling Property and Paying Rent
To buy a property your team lands on, you must...
🔸Pay the value listed on the property AND
🔸Read a book that fits ONE of the tasks for that property, that is at or above the listed page count for the property.
To buy houses, you must...
🔸Have purchased ALL the properties in a color set, then on your NEXT turn you may purchase house(s).
🔸You must buy houses equally across your color set (each property must have the same number of houses).
🔸Housing Costs are found on the Title Deed tab of the Game Board Spreadsheet.
If you land on an owned property, your team must...
🔸Pay rent to the team that owns the property AND
🔸Read a book that fits ONE of the tasks for that property, that is at or above the listed page count for the property.
🔸Rent Costs are shown on the Property Tracking tab of the Game Board Sheet.
If you land on a property that your team already owns, your team's turn ends and nothing further is required.
You may sell your owned properties to any team for any agreed-upon price. These types of transactions can occur outside of turns, but must be noted and tracked in the Turns Thread.
Chance, Community Chest and Ballot Box
When you land on any of these spaces, your team Captain/Co-Captain will spin the "wheel" to determine your task. Your profit or loss depends on your spin. If you get a "red" task, you must pay the amount based on your page count. If you get a "green" task, you earn money based on your page count.
Stock Exchange
When you land on these spaces, your team should choose a company to read for, select an interesting fact, and read a book that you can relate to that fact. Once a task has been chosen, it cannot be read for again. Your profit or loss depends on the roll that got you to that space. An odd number roll earns you a profit, and an even number roll earns you a loss.
Library
A team landing on this space may read a book of their choice. You will receive money based on your page count. Every 5th land on this space will have to pay a library fine (based on your page count).
Income and Luxury Tax, and the IRS
When your team lands on any of these spaces, your team must pay the amount listed AND read a book from the corresponding list.
Jail
You land in Jail when your token lands on the space marked "Jail". When your team lands on this space, your team must pay the amount listed AND complete a "Spell Out" of the word "JAIL" by reading 4 books.
Spell Out Options:
First Letter of the....
🔹Book Title
🔹Series Title
🔹Author First Name
🔹Author Last Name
🔹MC First Name
🔹MC Last Name
Subway and Railway Terminals
These are the only FREE spaces on the board. If you land on this space, your turn ends and you will begin your next roll at the opposite terminal and you may travel in whatever direction you want.
Savings Account - beginning 15-Sep-2024
Each team can deposit their unused books into a "Savings Account" - BUT unlike your salary deposit, your "Savings Account" earns interest over time.
The interest rate depends on the date of deposit and you earn at a higher rate the earlier you deposit books.
Note: Buddy Reads will still earn bonus value, plus their specific interest rate.
For example: A 100 page book deposited into your Savings Account on 15-Sep-2024 would earn an additional 75 pages of value, making the book worth $17.50! That same 100 page book, if deposited on the last day of the challenge would only be worth $10, it's normal value.
Once you deposit a book into your Savings Account, YOU MAY NOT WITHDRAW IT!! As a team, you will have to carefully decide when to deposit your unused books to maximize their value and contribute more effectively to your team net worth, while still allowing your team to have books to use for the challenge. Of course, you may still read books as you need them.
Determining Net Worth
Your teams Net Worth is based on the current Bank Account Balance and the sum of all Properties and Houses Owned. Properties and Houses are valued at their purchase price. (for example: Mediterranean Avenue with 2 Houses holds a value of $60+$50+$50=$160)
Mortgages and Bankruptcy
If you don't have enough money in your Bank Account to pay a debt, you may Mortgage any of your owned properties to gain cash.
🔸First, if you have houses on your property, you'll need to sell all the buildings on the entire owned set back to the Bank at half price.
🔸You cannot collect rent on Mortgaged Property, however, you can collect it on un-mortgaged properties in that color set.
🔸The mortgage value of each property is found on the Title Deed tab (this is how much CASH you will receive from the bank), and the interest rate is 10%.
🔸To lift the mortgage, you must repay the full amount borrowed, plus interest. (for example: The mortgage value of Baltic Ave is $30, so you would need to repay $33 to the bank)
🔸Mortgaged Properties CANNOT be sold to other teams!
You are declared bankrupt if you owe more than you can raise/pay either to another team or to the Bank, and your team must retire from the game.
🔹 Winner: 🔹
The Team with the MOST MONEY (including value of assets) at the end of the challenge will be declared the winner.
