Welcome! This is the second Groupwide Challenge which the group will conduct and you all are welcome to participate! Each and every member of the group is more than welcome to come and join us as we try to improve and enrich our experience of reading.

I just have one request before you make up your mind for joining : Please make sure that you will be active on GoodReads for the next 3-4 months at least. We had conducted a team challenge previously, but after signing up, members disappeared and the challenge...well, let's just say, it had to be deleted. I don't want people to join and then later on stop doing the challenge.

So, before signing up, make sure that you honestly are interested and will be active on GR for the next 3-4 months.

THE BASICS OF THE CHALLENGE

★ The challenge will be conducted over a period of 12 weeks.
The challenge starts on 27th April, 2015 and ends on 20th July, 2015.
★ All the sign-ups will be divided into teams of 3,4 or 5 depending upon the number of sign-ups.
★ The teams will be divided upon a random basis.
Re-reads are allowed for the challenge.
★ The books read for the challenge should be at least 200 page long.
★ The team with the maximum points at the end of week 12 will be the winner.

HOW TO PLAY

★ Each week, 3 new theme/clue will be provided to the participants of all the groups. [Please not. There is a difference between a theme and a genre. A genre means Romance, YA, contemporary etc. whereas a theme/clue is completely different.]
★ The members of each group have to complete either 1,2 or 3 of the themes. The points with each theme will be mentioned when the themes are announced.
★ Each member can read/complete any one clue per week.
★ Once the participants complete with a clue, they submit it in specific threads (which will be mentioned in detail later.)

THE CATCH IN THE CHALLENGE

★ The books which the participants read for completing a clue/theme have to be present in the 'read' shelf of any other member of the same team (which was added at least 3 months ago). For eg, if I want to read the book The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, then I have to make sure that the same book (any version is fine) is present in the 'read' shelf of any other member of my team and, the book has been added to the shelf at least 3 months ago.

★ The team members can decide among themselves which member will take on which clue depending upon the availability of books in the 'read' shelves of the members.

IMMUNITY

Introducing something new this time. Now, 12 weeks. 36 themes/clues. Choosing the books from other members' read shelf. Not necessary that you'll always get the right book. Thus, comes in the option of 'Immunity'. Basically, with this option, you can pass a week's themes/clues and still get 10 points. So, suppose, a team can't find any book fitting any of the themes/clues, then they opt for immunity (where they don't have to complete that week's themes/clues) and yet be rewarded with 10 points.

However, the catch here. Each team will be given only two chances to opt for immunity. Hence, use your immunity wisely.

Here ends the basics of the challenge. Further details and instructions will be provided later.

Sign-up for the challenge HERE

All questions, suggestions - ask them here itself.

Alison (a1ison74) | 418 comments Hi Ruchi,

I'm always up for a team challenge but just want to check I've understood the rules. If you can only read one theme each week does that mean just one book at most? Also if there are 3 themes and more than 3 team members does someone have a week off?

Yes. One member reads one theme each week and if there are more that 3 members in a team, then the remaining members get a week off.

Sunaina (childofchai) | 231 comments doesn't the 3 month catch limit the diversity( and options) of books read for the challenge?
i dont think i understand that particular rule can you please make it clearer for me? the book read for the challenge by me has to be in any of my other teammate's read list and shouldn't be newer than 3months in their list? is that it?
:)

Yes, that's exactly what you have to do. The books have to be in another team member's read list and shouldn't be newer than 3 months. Means, the member from whose list you are reading the book should have read that book at least 3 months ago. And I'm hoping it won't limit your options coz there will be at least 3 members per group. This is just in order to make the challenge tougher.

Alison (a1ison74) | 418 comments Sorry another question. I only joined goodreads about 5 months ago. While my read shelf includes books I've read over the last few years there won't be a read date against them. Will this cause a problem with the 3 month rule?

No no, not at all. But since you joined 5 months ago, books you've read 3 months ago will have the read date on them, right? So your team members have to steer clear of those books. Any other book is completely fine.

Celia (cinbread19) Doubt on Clue 2 for Week 1. In The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, the kids live with a professor. Is that considered a relationship?

PS. Thanks for doing this Ruchi. These clues are awesome.

Yes, that's allowed since the professor has quite a part in the book. And thank you so much :) I'm glad you like the clues.

For clue 1 of week 1 does it have to an actual place or can it be an imaginary place for example Narnia. And for clue 2 can the relationship be a child and parent or guardian relationship if the adult is teaching the child something?

Sorry, it has to be an actual place.
And the relationship should be strictly between teacher and student.
