Jason Mark | 2 comments You see this trope a lot in Romance (what if she finds out I'm not really the CEO, but actually an intern?), but also in fantasy (I can't go to the person who could easily solve this problem for help because ), and it's my least favorite trope. It just feels like lazy writing.

My wife calls this "stupid tension" and it's in so many romance/rom-coms. I think of it as a "Seinfeld story" because there was a period in the 90s where every TV show and movie felt like the entire sense of drama evolved around a "secret" that will come out right at the climax.

I'm trying to screen out a whole category of books, and I don't know what this trope is called so I don't know what to look for. I feel like there might not actually be a name for it, but I can't be the only one who notices (or dislikes) this trope.

NOTE: This is VERY different than a story where (for example) a trans teen living with a bunch of homophobes are afraid to come out to their family or their school or a spy novel, or mystery. Those are all legitimate tension and believable.

Where it's just frustrating and I gave up on the book is when it's something like "I used their toothbrush and if they find out the world will end" and then a whole story about hiding the fact that the toothbrush was used, and in the end it comes out and everyone gets mad, but then apologizes and it goes back to normal.

Is there another term other than "Seinfeld Story" for this? Should there be?

Hi Jason

Librarians are volunteers who do the book cataloging & stuff like that. Site functionality is nothing to do with us.

This thread will give you an idea of things we can't help with.

Saying that, I don't believe there is a way to do what you want, but you could try asking Support (Staff)

Jason Mark | 2 comments Oh I misunderstood. I thought this was a discussion forum of career librarians, and I was hoping they could help me with this. This has nothing to do with site functionality or site data.... thanks for the heads up.

No we are the volunteers who maintain the database. As a general rule if you look in this group & your question is completely different from the other questions then you are in the wrong place.
If you click on Community then Groups you may find a group of real life librarians & you could ask them.
