Katherine Kendryna For my first review, I chose the book “Inch by Inch” by Leo Lionni. I discovered this Traditional Literature children’s book on GoodReads.com. This book received a Caldecott Honor award in 1961, which is chosen once a year as the most distinguished American picture book for children! Which is a humongous deal and honor to be honored with this award! The protagonist and main character of “Inch by Inch” is not named, and is an inchworm. The story is about this inchwork doing his best to avoid being eaten by multiple birds throughout the story. The age of the inchworm is also not included in the story. THe inchwork gets out of being eaten by distracting the birds by measuring different parts of the body. For example, he measures the neck of the body, the tail of a pheasant, etc. The pictures in this picture book are extremely detailed as well as extremely colorful. These pictures have a unique look to them, like watercolor paintings, is how I would describe them. The vocabulary used in this children's book is and should be familiar to children and excellent for young readers to listen to, while looking at the pictures in the book. ‘Inch by Inch’ can be found in multiple different locations, such as a hard copy, paperback, e-book, as well as an audio version of this book. The vocabulary in this book is creative because it is very repetitive which may help students to recognize the words more often, while it is continuously being repeated in the story. As for diversity exposure in this story, it would allow for more of a universal theme to a broad audience about the different types of animals, more specifically birds. ‘Inch by Inch’ is recommended for younger children, preschool children to possibly early elementary grades. This is an amazing option for early readers due to the simple text and engaging illustrations throughout the entire book. This book would be a phenomenal addition to the classroom and could have multiple uses. For example, while reading, students would be able to develop listening as well as comprehension skills. As for math, this book introduces basic measurement skills!Inch by Inch
