20.2 - Rookie at the Top - Laure's Task: Dragons of Summer

This task is inspired by my love for the best game in the world: Dungeon and Dragons.
I only started playing six years ago but since then, I have not stopped. A year ago, I took the plunge and I am also now the Game Master for a campaign I run every Tuesday night.

This is a ONE book task. You have three options.
Required: State which option you chose when you post.

Option 1. The first character I created was a high elf monk called Ilith Fan. She survived the campaign unharmed and is now level 15.
Read a book which has a 1 and a 5 in its page number or year of publication.

Option 2. I have just finished playing a classic Dragonlance campaign. Before I started the campaign, I also caught up with the iconic Dragonlance series by Margaret Weis.
For this option, read a book from the Dragonlance series or a book featuring a dragon as one of the characters.
Required: If the dragon character is not evident from the description or the GR metadata, provide a reference.

Option 3. I listen to many DND podcasts and shows during the week. I have a new favourite podcast: The Wizard, the Witch and the Wild One. Brennan Lee Mulligan is the GM for the show, and he is a great storyteller.
For this option, read a book with either the word: Wizard, Witch, Wild or One in the title. Stand alone word, plurals and possessions are allowed, no other variations

Amy | 2168 comments Will this work for Option 2:

Fourth Wing

It doesn't mention a specific dragon, but the characters are becoming dragon riders, so there have to be dragons in the book.

Brooke | 1109 comments Amy, I've read Fourth Wing and can confirm lots of dragons in the book. And I'd consider at least 2 of them to be impactful characters in the story.

Thanks, Brooke! Was it a good book?

If you like YA-ish fantasy & romance, I think you'll like it. I was reluctant to read it because of all of the hyped reviews, but I really enjoyed it. I plan to read the sequel Iron Flame for this task.

I appreciate the feedback. Sounds like it's worth a shot.

I'm reading Iron Flame now and plan to use it for this task.

Christina (AKA Babbling) (babblingbookreviews) | 855 comments I'm currently re-reading my favorite dragon Shapeshifter series. I'm hoping one will work for this task.

Robin P | 1609 comments If you like historical fiction, the Temeraire series that starts with His Majesty's Dragon has an air force composed of dragons in the Napoleonic Wars. There is a wonderful "bromance" between the rider and the dragon.

A very different take is When Women Were Dragons, where women in the 1950's who get fed up with sexism actually turn into dragons. I might read the book with an indigenous point of view, To Shape a Dragon's Breath.

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3675 comments It's nice to "meet" a fellow GM. I started on AD&D 1st edition, but I usually run diceless or dice-light games nowadays. I remember playing bits of Dragonlance when it first came out (I started playing at uni in the early-80s)!

I'm also thinking To Shape a Dragon's Breath for Option 2, if that's okay? Otherwise, Fourth Wing is also on the list.

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Anne McCaffrey's Pern yet. My very first dragon series, and the original Dragonflight remains one of my all-time favourite books.

Michelle (michellesoleil) | 361 comments OMG, thank you for making a task about reading a book from the Dragonlance series! The next book in the series has been sitting on my TBR for SO many years, and I keep getting distracted by shiny new books. Awesome!

Yes, it works. I've read the book and dragons are characters in the story. :)

Dragon shapeshifters will be included in this task as they are per se dragons too. Well, that is how it works in Dungeon and Dragons so, I will accept these instances for this task. :D

I am a more recent convert to the game, but enjoy it immensely. I am a 'dice goblin' so dice are part of the attraction for me so not sure if I would like diceless games, hehe.

I love the Dragonlance world. I have only read the first three books but will be catching up with the next three before the end of this SRC, hopefully.

I am also fitting in a Dragonlance book in this task!

Dee (austhokie) | 8946 comments Hi Lauren - can I ask about

Flamefall - the dragons from book 1 were significant to the story as they use the dragons as means to control the population through fear/destroying cities etc

message 19: by Laure (new)

Laure (goodreadscomlaure) | 561 comments Hi Dee, the dragon in your book needs to be a character in the story. If your dragon is not a pet, companion or sentient, it is very unlikely to be a character.

I also wanted to say the dragon must be a character in the book you are reading right now. From your post, I infer that they might not be around in book 2. Maybe I'm wrong! :D

Thanks for posting, I hope my answers help.

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3675 comments BTW, if anyone likes Cozy Mysteries, there's a wonderful series by Kim M. Watt called the Beaufort Scales mysteries. As well as a sassy group of WI members, there are several dragon characters.

Good to know, I'll put the series on my TBR. Thank you.

For publications date, are you looking for the original publication date or of the edition read?

Thanks!

message 23: by Laure (new)

Laure (goodreadscomlaure) | 561 comments I think we will go with the original, if that's okay. Thank you.
