What to read after ACOTAR, TOG, CC, and Fourth Wing series?

Hi! I'm looking for book recommendations after reading all of Sarah J Maas' series. I've read Fourth Wing and Iron Flame which I absolutely loved. Everything I've read after hasn't compared to the excitement and page-turning obsession when reading a fantastic book.

I've read the Kindred Curse series (Spark of the Everflame #1, and #2, and #3 by Penn Cole) it's written in first person, the world building, political intrigue, magic abilities, demi gods, the best banter I've ever read from a series is so good and I'm putting that up there with my Top 5 series (it might be just as good, if not better than ACOTAR) but would love any recommendations on any books or series that compare to these other books.

Looking for great world building, a great plot, interesting characters, political intrigue and conflicts, first person (preferred but not a deal breaker), fantasy or fiction. Comment recommendations below!

I loved the Blood and Ash series! I'm on book 4!

I would recommend The Plated Prisoner Series by Raven Kennedy, although I'm only in the beginning of book 4 now, and there will apparently be 2 more coming out. It took some time getting into, but so did TOG for me... Other than that I also enjoyed the Once Upon A Broken Heart trilogy and the Kingdom of the Wicked series.

From Blood and Ash
A Court this Cruel and Lovely

i would suggest When the moon hatched as i enjoyed it very much and it cured my book hangover but... the next book isnt out yet and now im sad 😭. I also really liked Quicksilver as well but again, the second book isnt out yet. im crying.
I also found some Acotar extras that someone wrote on Ao3 that has Acomaf is Rhys's pov and other stuff which i really liked. I think the author is illyriantremors.

okay my first series after Fourth Wing was ACOTAR, and after I finished all of those, I read Rhapsodic which was moreso urban fantasy romance than the strict high fantasy romance we're used to, but the FMC's love interest is pretty much Rhysand's younger, silver-haired cousin and he rules his own night court, so it was a nice first read/transition out of Prythian staying in the same realm of book (still very very spicy, though the setting itself feels a little bit YA). I read books 1 and 2 of that series, have not started the third book yet. I'm diving into Zodiac Academy next

I would recommend.

thanks.

I really like the Blood of Fae series by Briar Boleyn. I am reading through ACOTAR right now, and they are very similar.

If you like fantasy series I would recommend light lark or The Serpent and the Wings of Night. could not put the book down.
Also if you are okay with dystopian shatter me is good choice. (amazing found family series!!)
I also enjoyed Quicksilver. the banter and the romance were amazing.
Once upon a broken heart was amazing as well. Especially the second book !!

I definitely recommend Serpent & the Wings of Night, it cured my ACOTAR hangover.

I LOVED the Blood and Ash series, but if you start it be cautious because once you finish book 5, the next one listed is Visions of Flesh and Blood. This book is actually a compendium of the Blood and Ash series and another series - Flesh and Fire. You actually need to read the F&F series before reading Visions of Flesh and Blood to avoid any spoilers. My husband surprised me with books I'd stuck in my Amazon cart but I got lucky because I Googled it before starting VoF&B lol. But while I waited for all of the F&F series to arrive, I found 'How Does it Feel?' and 'What Did You Do?' which is another Fae series (book 3 to release in January 2025). I will say that this series is much.... darker? than the others I've read. Very good, but the author definitely has a trigger warning at the beginning of both books (which I actually love that she did that). If you have any kind of trauma regarding a myriad of things, check that trigger warning before determining if it's one you should read or not.

Not many books compare to SJM and the Empyrean Series but I have a few I enjoy a lot and would recommend.

- The Serpent & the Wings of Night (this book is amazing! It's almost like a dark ACOTAR with vampires instead of fey)

- The Cruel Prince (I know this is basic but it has faeries and had lots of politics which intrigued me a lot)

- What the River Knows (I have no clue where this rec comes from but it takes place in Egypt and is very intriguing)

- Divine Rivals (It is a rivals-to-lovers duology with some politcal elements I suppose if you count the war)

These are all so random... but trust they are incredible books

There's a few series I have really liked.

The Witch Walker series by Charissa Weaks, is really good, obviously it involves witches. The female main character is also mute and uses sign, another interesting twist.

Another series I liked a lot was the Bargainer series by Laura Thalassa, female main is a siren who likes to mess with the Bargainer, a lot of world building but also very fast pace.

More recently I've been reading the Honey and Ice Trilogy by Kelly St. Clare and Shannon Mayer, it's definitely a slow burn series, enemies to lovers, not quite as good as ACOTAR but good enough. If you enjoyed Fourth Wing and ACOTAR, you may also like these series as well.

Both of these series are very spicy but also has their own interesting twists!
I hope this helps someone!

Caraval and Once Upon A Broken Heart are two trilogies set in the same world and some of my favorite series. Also Powerless all the way it’s amazing.

I'd recommend The Mages of the Wheel series. The world building is insanely good, and you mentioned you enjoyed political intrigue which is on another level in this series (a lot of verbal battles are fought...). I would describe it as romantasy although it does not have the element of having elves/faeries or supernatural beings. But it does have mages/wizards! The smut scenes are A+ too.

A Dawn of Onyx series!

I’ve read all of the recommendations that have been posted except When the Moon Hatched, One Dark Window, and Powerless (but I have it and it’s next).

I 2nd them all especially the Plated Prisoner series (however, I agree it took some time to get into - book 2 I was hooked), Spark of the Everflame (100%).

Currently on the 3rd of the series that begins with A Court this Cruel and Lovely. Fantastic.

Also recommend:
Serpent & the Wings of Night
Kingdom of the Wicked
Blood & Steel
Book of Azrael
King of Battle & Blood

I'm also enjoing Powerless. Second chapter of the trilogy will be published on July 2nd

ooooooh I have been in this book hangover! I FEEL YOU. I hear you. I am you. Here are a few that helped me get out of that slump (in order of least to most spice):

From Blood and Ash- Series. 4-5 books? Can't remember. Vampirish. Enemies to lovers. Demi Gods. Overthrowing dictators. Spiiiiiiiicy.
Healer to the Ash King - Stand alone novel, but has many books in the same universe, so if you liked it you can read the next. Magic system similar to Avatar the Last Airbender. Enemies to lovers. Free if you pay for Amazon Unlimited.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue - In the "real world" but I need to include it. This book is about a woman who can live for decades, remain beautiful and enchanting, but as soon as she leaves the room everyone forgets her. Incredible story of loneliness and love.
Throne of Glass - If you loved ACOTAR, why not read more Sarah J Maas? This book is amazing. Imagine the Selection Series, but instead it's to determine the best assassin in the land. The FMC is incredible. I liked her better than Feyre and Violet COMBINED. There are 7 books. My husband and I are reading them together. Spice is more fade-to-black.
The Cruel Prince - About a human girl who has been kidnapped to live in the world of faeries. Interesting magic concepts and a deep enemies to lovers plot. More YA.

Have fun!!! And let us know what you choose ✨

I also second the Plated Prisoner series! The 5th book did come out just this past December with the 6th (and supposed to be last) book expected to release this August! It is a fantastic series!

I'd recommend Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig!

I thoroughly enjoyed When the Moon Hatched and had the same type of hangover that I experienced after reading the ACOTAR series. It is only book 1 and the next book doesn't release until Fall 2025 but I cannot recommend this book enough. The world building is really good and the plot kept me at the edge of my seat.
