Caroline Reyes | 12 comments Hi guys! Any tips on how to decide if you want to keep reading a book if you’re unsure??
Someone once told me read the first 100 pages and then decide.
What do you guys do??

Patricia Hollers | 11 comments Until I'm done with it!
I agree with Kira Life is to short to read a bad book.
I stopped reading A Fate Inked in Blood about half way the story was pretty good and I liked the 2 main characters BUT the heroine kept biting the insides of her cheek. It just started to really irritate me and I couldn't keep reading it.

message 5: by Lydia (new)

Lydia (arriettys_library) Whenever I find that I’m bored I just stop reading. It’s different if I actually bought the book.

I probably make it about 40 to 50 percent through...I have a bad habit of reading books anyway just to say I finished them, though. I try not to write a review afterward to be nice. Ha!

message 8: by Gyan (new)

Gyan K If a book/series is not sparking joy I DNF it. I generally try to read at least 50% of a stand-alone book or at least the first book if it is a series before DNFing. That said I rarely DNF books because I do a lot of research, read reviews on Goodreads, watch YouTube reviews, before deciding to read a book/start a series. I never pick up a book for its cover. I do have authors that are spontaneous buy for me but otherwise I do my due diligence before deciding which book/series deserves a place on my TBR. Series I DNFd after reading the first book: Fourth wing, Legendborn, Ninth House. Series I have DNFd after reading two books: legends of the first empire by Michael Sullivan. I might come back to it in the future, who knows.

Doris (dorisb) | 104 comments I'm with Tasha and Sybille: halfway or until it moves from improbable to outright impossible. Or until I realize it keeps putting me to sleep.

message 10: by Eleven (new)

Eleven | 11 comments The moment it starts being boring or I don't like the style. If I really don't like something, I can and will ditch a book after the first sentence. I read for myself, not for anyone else, meaning, reading is not some task I gotta complete. If the book doesn't work for me, there are plenty other books out there.

message 11: by Samdisha (new)

Samdisha | 68 comments 150 pages or 30 minutes

Cassandra 🍁☕️📚 (blondie2611) | 151 comments If I’m not feeling it, then it’s a DNF for me. My tbr is out of control, so I don’t have time to waste on books I don’t like.

message 13: by Elena (new)

Elena portal | 1 comments I don’t really stop reading a book unless if it’s really boring for example iron flame I had to stop at 38% because I couldn’t take it anymore my brain cells were legit hurting me.

message 14: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Mahady | 60 comments Once upon a time I felt I had to read every word and finish all books. Now I have realized that I will never have time in my life to read all the books I want to read. I can DNF a book by page 50. If I’m not liking it but still want to know how it ends, I now skip to the end and just read the end. The REAL question is, have you ever read so much of a book that you feel you CANNOT DNF because you have gotten too far/put too much time in???

message 15: by Anthony (new)

Anthony Brooks (asbrooks88) I've only had this happen once, the book was so bad I had to stop after about 30%.

message 16: by Heidi_2811 (new)

Heidi_2811 (inkerann) About half or almost half of the book, but if everything makes me annoyed or I don't get any feeling from it, I leave it there.

message 17: by The_5ft_reader (new)

The_5ft_reader I give a book 2 chapters, but I can usually tell by the start if I'm going to be into a book or not

message 18: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Goldstein | 125 comments First 50 pages or so for me. Depends on the length and whether it's in a series or not.

☆EmilyEverAfter☆ (emilyeverafter) | 102 comments I usually give it a good try with 100 pages or so. I can usually tell if it's not my vibe. sometimes I feel a slump coming on mid read, and I'll do a "soft dnf" where I come back at a later time. I'm a mood reader, for sure.

heav (hamilton’s version) (judesduartes) | 23 comments i dont usually dnf but when i have its gotten maybe 4-5 chapters out of me before i quit

message 21: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 26 comments I'm kind of a mood reader with a HUGE tbr and sometimes I feel like it's something with me and not the book. So I stop after 2 chapters with a promise that I'll come back when I'm on the track to love the book the way it deserves.
But yeah, there were times I hated some books enough to never continue. I still remember reading Diary of Oxygen Theif hoping for jaw dropping stuff ( just because it was written by anonymous ) and I felt pity for myself reading such ridiculous excuses a man makes to defend himself after treating women like shit.

message 22: by sarah (new)

sarah | 288 comments I try to go at least halfway trying to give it the best chance to change my mind.

message 23: by javurkova_misa (new)

javurkova_misa | 77 comments it depends on how long the book is. if it's romance that has like 350 I dnf at like 120pages. if it's rlly rlly bad Even sooner. if it's 700 pages long fantasy I try to stay for like 200 pages.

message 24: by Meredith (new)

Meredith Pocius | 63 comments I try to go at least over halfway through the book to give it the best chance before I go and change my mind depending on how long the book is.

message 25: by Michael (last edited Jun 05, 2024 08:01AM) (new)

Michael Bertrand | 86 comments Depends. I'm stubborn so I'll usually slog through.

I instant DNF if the content hurts my mental health- usually, that's racism, homophobia, animal torture, or something like that. Doesn't matter where this content happens- first page or last.

I DNF if I'm dreading reading the book because it's boring, slow, or some other non-offensive reason and I'm under 50 pages.

message 26: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellecales) | 45 comments Around a hundred pages sometimes a few more.

message 29: by ♤Lizzy♤ (new)

♤Lizzy♤ (Inactive) | 200 comments 30-70 pages. I've noticed that where the plot really starts, the first 29 pages r usually for background.
if you can't get there within 70 pages:
bye

message 30: by ♤Lizzy♤ (new)

♤Lizzy♤ (Inactive) | 200 comments @michael
odd, those sort of things always add to the plot for me.

message 31: by Violet (new)

Violet Sorrengail | 66 comments 100 pages, that's when things pick up and I get to the point where I can't put the book down

message 32: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessacumberlandcountypa) Interesting conversation! If the book is non-fiction, sometimes I'll skip around to upcoming chapters to tease or excite my interest and then I return to the point where I last stopped. Sometimes with books that aren't working for me at the moment I leave them and try again (sometimes years!) later.

message 33: by zeynah ✿ (new)

zeynah ✿ | 17 comments ooooh i hated the first half of acotar but i had the patience to keep going and loved the ending!!! so i always try to hang on till at least 50%

message 34: by Ineffable7980x (new)

Ineffable7980x | 47 comments Totally depends. I like to give things a fair shot, so usually 50-100 pages. But I have dropped books at 20 pages as well.

message 35: by Agnes (new)

Agnes Carlisi Meo | 1 comments I usually read about 50 pages first and then will put it down for a while. But I tried to return to finish since the book is usually on my bucket list to read. I am the type of person that likes to finish all books I start!!!

message 36: by Viggo (new)

Viggo Pedersen | 16 comments If I've first started a book, I read the whole book! No matter how bad it might be.

message 37: by Joy (new)

Joy (rabbit-stew) Lisa, I have DNFed a 400-page book at 300 pages.

I did that once. I'd read and liked all books in her catalog, so I kept waiting for the book to get better. It didn't. It kept getting worse. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore and quit.

I'm DNFing a book right now. I'm around halfway in and I'm done. It's annoying, and I have other books to read. I generally give books the half-way mark unless the writing is terrible. If the writing or editing is terrible, I put it aside and don't give it another thought.

message 38: by Tanja (new)

Tanja | 315 comments When I'm in a bookshop and not sure about buying a book, I read the first 5 pages and if I like it, I will buy and read. Often I need more than the description on the cover to be convinced. With this method I have only books I'm interested in

message 39: by Robert (new)

Robert Robertson (trk06) | 52 comments I finish every book which I start . It may take a while as I'll read other books . I've I'll started so I'll finish approach to books .

message 40: by Kindle Jenner (new)

Kindle Jenner | 90 comments I can’t DNF a book, even if I want to. It’s like an itch in my brain if I don’t finish.

message 41: by Johnwick (new)

Johnwick brown | 3 comments After reading 10 % of the book

message 42: by asapidox (new)

asapidox | 24 comments 30% in

message 43: by Brianna (new)

Brianna Habel | 10 comments I usually give it either a few chapters or 50 pages, that gives me a good enough idea. my adhd brain can't take any more torment than that lol

message 44: by Christine (new)

Christine | 93 comments Most of the books I have been reading catch my attention in the first few chapters and want to read it. So I guess I would have to say if it doesn't grab me in the first few chapters, I may DNF it. If the book has an audiobook, i may try that to get through it, especially if it is a popular book that has pretty good reviews.
But I also tend to stick with the genres I know I like and don't really branch out.

message 45: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (maequeen) | 3 comments Sybille wrote: "Until I cannot stand it any longer. LOL"

I agree. Sometimes that’s at 12%. But I’ve also had times when I’ve made it 80% through a book and just did not care to see the end.

message 46: by Anthony (new)

Anthony Brooks (asbrooks88) About 20%, Or if I start falling asleep. 😁😁😁

message 47: by Bushra (new)

Bushra I agree, I usually stop when I’ve just had enough.
By that point I’ll be skimming just to get through it anyways.

message 48: by The Cozy Cat (new)

The Cozy Cat (thecozycat) | 22 comments I try to finish if I can but if it's too painful I stop about half way.

message 49: by quietpageturner (new)

quietpageturner | 21 comments At least 25-30%

message 50: by BAM xo (new)

BAM xo (bambamxo) | 10 comments between 15/20%, the story should have begun taking off by this point, if I don't like how it's laid out(info dumps, poor research, badly written characters, sloppy direction, the overall vibe) it gets the chop. ✖️
Luckily, I haven't had too many DNF in my life so far. ❤️
