The mods have been discussing this thread, and we have come to a decision, so I put the sirens there to make sure everyone sees it.🙂
This thread is for a game, not for conversation. Your "First Thoughts" are supposed to be short, 1-3 word responses, not conversations. A *bit* of commentary/explanation is ok if it is offset with (parentheses) and *related to your First Thought,* but please do not take advantage of that for the purpose of conversation or spamming.
If this thread doesn't revert back to being a game as described above, then we are going to close this thread. There is another thread for conversing--General Chat, and there are other threads such as the Spam thread or the Extended First Thoughts thread for being a little crazy. The mods monitor the threads, and we cannot keep up with so many "conversation-like" threads. We are hopeful that we can keep this game going, but if it continues to be conversation-like, we are going to close it down by early next week.
I will repost this a couple more times to make sure everyone sees it, so please don't be offended if you see it again--I just don't want to miss anyone.

@Bets, Why can't we rename this thread First Thoughts (1) and then have a First Thoughts (2)? :)
It's just this thread especially attracts the goofiness in the group, unlike other threads. No idea why that is, but the others never catch on,

Didn't you make 'first (extended) thoughts' because ppl here have too many conversations in this, thus creating one more thread to moderate? Seems to me, its a wash, you are moderating the same number of conversations regardless of where they appear.I dont know why, but this is the thread ppl are active in. A lot of groups on GR are completed dead. I think y'all should be happy people are active here.
Isn't the issue here really that the purpose of the thread does not match its use? Remove the 'extended' thoughts thread and change the rules on this one. Problem solved.
Since I get fussed at a lot, I'll just go back to my cave ;)

I am going to address the ideas above. I hope it will help you all understand the reason behind the decision we made.
For those of you who have not been around long, here is some backgroud. This thread used to function quite well as it was intended, and it was an active, well-liked game. Someone joined who enjoyed the game, but gave longer "extended" responses. New people joined who didn't realize that those extended responses weren't really the way the game was to be played, and little by little the game got clogged up with a long responses making it hard to sift through and play the game as intended. The longer responses turned toward a spamming kind of fun.
In order to get FT back to the original game, the mods created the Spam chat so that the fun spamming could continue, but so that FT could go back to the original game. However, that didn't have the feel of the FT thread, so it didn't change the FT game back. We then created Extended FT, which seemed to work great at first.
Now, a few months later, here we are with 2 additional threads created so that people can spam and give extended reactions to their hearts delight but also so that we can maintain the FT game for the people who liked playing it as it was intended. In our minds, we tried to be as accomodating as possible to a wide range of people.
To be honest, we don't understand why folks who say they "can't" play this game the way it was supposed to be played don't just stay on the other threads, since those folks clearly don't like this particular FT game. Some of you want us to change the rules to accomodate you, but don't you see that that takes something away from other people? We don't think that is fair. The suggestion to create another FT thread? We already created another FT thread, and we are still having this problem.
To be honest, we're pretty discouraged. Over the course of this game, we really tried to accomodate various folks' personalities, and now we are being put down and/or challenged because some people simply don't want to do the same thing they are already doing on the thread designed for it: Extended First Thoughts ( https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... ) This has taken a game away from other people who used to enjoy it, and I honestly have a hard time believing that that is what you really want. That's why I included some of the background to our decision--so that you could see how we tried to accomodate everyone, not just a select group.
Anyway, we really do love you all and want the best for you individually but also as a group. We feel that this is the best decision for both, since it leaves all the options open.
